POSITION SUMMARY:Performs complex technical assignments that are broadly outlined, requiring theoretical insight and interpretation, and allows for latitude for planning and modification of methods and techniques. Requires a high degree of skill, judgment and understanding of the principles and methodologies of electroneurodiagnostic procedures. Requires a high degree of independent decision making exercised during critical periods while surgery is being performed. The procedures involved include inpatient and outpatient Electroencephalography (EEG), Evoked Potential (EP) procedures, Long Term Video EEG Monitoring, electrocorticography (ECoG) and electromyography (EMG), Intraoperative SSEPs, MEPs, and other intra-operative neuro-monitoring (IOM) and mapping procedures. Acts as a liaison between the electroencephalographer, physicians, and technologists to coordinate, perform and provide technical assistance during complex and highly technical procedures. Serves as a senior technologist to instruct and prepare personnel for successful completion of registry exams. Provides training in the interpretation of EEG, EP, and IOM recordings, applications and the academics of EEG, EP, and IOM technology.TYPICAL DUTIES:

All of the typical duties of an EEG technologist 2. See job code 7204. Performs routine and complex EEGs, long term epilepsy monitoring (LTM), neurotelemetry, and patient safety monitoring. Works under indirect supervision and follows standard quality assurances and controls.

All of the typical duties of and Clinical Neurophysiologist Technologist. See job code 7205 Performs, or coordinates the performance of, complex EPs (VER, BAER, UE/LE SSEPs) in outpatient, inpatient, neonate, and intensive care units, and the operating room for diagnostic and prognostic purposes.

Performs and coordinates surgical monitoring procedures using EEG, EPs, EMG (electromyogram), and central and peripheral nervous system mapping techniques. Preoperatively reviews the planned intraoperative procedure and orders for monitoring to determine the structures at risk relative to patient history and pre-existing conditions; make needed adjustments in monitoring by communicating with the appropriate personnel. Intra-operatively provides monitoring of central and peripheral functions throughout the operative procedure utilizing appropriate NIOM modalities and techniques while ensuring patient electrical safety. Able to effectively communicate all time sensitive intraoperative changes clearly to all surgical parties, including anesthesia and surgeon.

Able to assist with the setup and provide maintenance of LTM EEG recordings of patients with stereotactic (sEEG) and subdural (Phase 2) implantation. Understands the equipment and software used for recording a dense number of channels. Able to run software for stimulation via implanted electrodes. Comfortable with scanning the daily EEG files and notifying the appropriate epileptologist with any concerns for seizures. Competent to troubleshoot any technical issues that arise.

Takes “on-call” on rotation basis with other technologists.

Works independently a variety of shifts including days, evenings, and overnights.

Maintains HSPP certification and able to participate in data collection of patient information for research purposes appropriately.

Trains new hires, assists in the board exam preparation for R. EEG T., trains R EEG T in clinical EP and assists in their board exam preparation, and trains neurophysiology technologists in IOM and assists in their certification exam preparation.

Travels to various inpatient (Strong Memorial Hospital and Highland Hospital) and outpatient (Westfall Neurology Clinic, East River Pediatric Neurology) locations to perform EEG and EP recordings.

Minimum requirments to qualify for ABRET R EEG T registration, R EP T registration and CNIM certification.

Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
