GENERAL PURPOSE:The Assessment and User Experience (AUX) Librarian conducts research to measure the impact of library resources and services, and improve the experience of Miner Libraries users as they interact with web platforms, physical spaces, and library services. The AUX Librarian plans and coordinates user research broadly across the Libraries, including collecting, analyzing, and documenting data useful for evaluating library operations and understanding user needs. With data-driven decision making and user experience research expertise, they assess, design, and improve user interfaces, both public-facing and staff-facing, and inform strategic direction and resource allocation. They bring experience in and passion for equitable and ethical user research (e.g., a current understanding of best practices for inclusive and privacy-protecting user research, as well as research methods which respect underrepresented and vulnerable populations). The ideal candidate approaches web design, research, learning technologies, and user support from a forward-looking perspective, tailoring effective solutions which address the unique and evolving education, research, and clinical information needs of URMC’s diverse community.The AUX Librarian will be an excellent communicator who thrives in an environment which values an iterative approach to library resource development. Miner Libraries play a key role in this effort and, with the support of the AUX Librarian, will create a welcoming environment with resources, services, and spaces which are accessible to all users across the University’s medical enterprise.JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Routinely initiates, collaborates, consults, and advises across the Libraries on cross-departmental quantitative and qualitative user and research studies; generates analysis and translates insights into written reports to inform organizational decision-making; advocates strongly for changes which would improve the experience of library users; records departmental requests and staff time spent through statistics maintenance; fosters a close relationship between the Libraries and patron needs by organizing the Libraries’ advisory groups; assesses accuracy and applicability of emerging AI tools related to information discovery and synthesis.

Consults with library stakeholders, including students, faculty, and staff, regarding user experience and usability issues and develops project plans in alignment with strategic plans of the Libraries and the University as a whole; develops and leads User Experience (UX) research projects, including designing and coordinating usability studies; partners with Miner Libraries staff to maintain user recruitment lists and conduct outreach for studies; contributes user experience research skills to project teams and committees; supports various phases of UX research – e.g., information architecture, user flows, visual design, accessibility, usability testing; advises employees on UX research outcomes and results.

Works collaboratively across departments in maintaining a functional, attractive and usable website with the end user always in mind; leads web team and related efforts in the design of the Libraries' webspace; work includes content creation, user experience design, and accessibility; stays abreast of trends in instructional technologies, research support tools, and online publishing and scholarship; implements and maintains internal and external communication, statistical, and scheduling tools; works collaboratively with IIE’s software engineer to develop and maintain the Libraries' website.

Offer guidance and support to faculty, staff, and students on methods, systems, innovations, and best practices related to research data management, curation, discovery, use, and sharing; provide training, support, and expertise on existing and emerging data management, sharing, and analysis tools and workflows, with an emphasis on open and reproducible practices; remain current on trends and issues in digital scholarship, scholarly communication, and open scholarship, particularly in the context of research data and code; participate in outreach efforts and instructional sessions about data management, discoverability, repositories, and publisher mandates to faculty, staff, and students at URMC; provide in-depth, specialized research consultation and reference services; perform complex and highly technical literature searches; participate in the Edward G. Miner Library on-call service.

Serves on appropriate committees or groups (within Miner Libraries, Institute for Innovative Education, University of Rochester, greater-Rochester region, national associations), as appropriate; represents Miner in collaborations with local, regional, and national library associations; contributes to the profession through active participation in conferences, associations, and research.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s degree in the field of library and information science from an A.L.A. - accredited institution required.

An advanced degree such as EdD or PhD, significant coursework, or equivalent experience in qualitative and quantitative research methods preferred.

6 year’s experience working in progressively more responsible library professional roles required.

5 year’s experience as a health science library professional required.

Understanding of current issues in library assessment, ethical data collection, use, and storage required.

Demonstrated knowledge and skills using analytical tools and software required.

Expertise using visualization tools and other means of effectively communicating evidence from data preferred.
