GENERAL PURPOSE:The Collective Cognition Lab at the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences (BCS) at the University of Rochester is seeking a full-time Lab Manager to begin immediately. Job responsibilities include performing and supervising the maintenance of the lab¿s three newly established animal research colonies (a tropical fish lab, a homing pigeon loft, and a marmoset lab) as well as assisting in research undertaken therein. Duties will involve standard daily husbandry (feeding & watering of animals, upkeep of facilities), basic health monitoring of the animals, weekly cleaning, ordering of supplies, maintenance of lab records, and the curation of data, permits, protocols, and other regulatory paperwork. The candidate will also be expected to participate in training and data collection during behavioral experiments conducted with the animals, which will focus on the spatial and logical problem-solving abilities of individual subjects as well as of groups.RESPONSIBILITIES:
Participating in daily behavioral training/experiments for colony animals, performing behavioral coding from video, offering input on study design, apparatuses, stimuli, and data collection methodologies.
Performing and supervising daily animal feeding and care, facility maintenance (may involve small DIY tasks), health monitoring, and enrichment of colony animals. Liaising with veterinary staff.
Ordering lab supplies and other research materials, maintaining lab records, coordinating service support such as arranging equipment repair or liaising with Facilities. Troubleshooting equipment problems.
Supporting animal subject protocol and approvals: coordinating with faculty, postdocs and graduate studies prior to study beginning, submitting necessary documentation for UCAR approvals and renewals, responding to UCAR questions and comments, maintaining records necessary for progress reports.
Coordinating training of post¿docs, graduate students and undergraduate laboratory assistants in appropriate laboratory operations involving usage of equipment, data collection, and data coding.
Other duties as assignedQUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor¿s degree in appropriate discipline required.
2 years of experience working in a research lab with animals required.
Expected to be highly organized and knowledgeable in the policies and procedures for working with vertebrate animals. Primate and/or bird handling skills and some experience with electronic databases/data curation preferred.
