Nature of Work

This is skilled work performing the activities associated with the repair and maintenance a variety of county owned trucks, vehicles and heavy equipment and machinery used for highway operations and road maintenance activities. Under general supervision, incumbents perform routine preventive maintenance, safety inspections and repair work on mowing equipment and equipment and machinery used for road maintenance including tractors, mowers, chippers, backhoes, dump trucks, graders, rollers, snow removal equipment, dozers, and paving equipment. Additional responsibilities include assisting with diagnosing equipment malfunctions, procuring parts and supplies necessary to perform needed repairs and repairing hydraulic components when necessary. Job responsibilities require considerable knowledge and experience in vehicle repair and maintenance, heavy equipment repair, hydraulics, welding and metal fabrication. Job performance is evaluated by the Shop Foreman through review of knowledge and expertise in equipment repair and maintenance, ability to diagnose and repair equipment and/or machinery in an efficient manner, willingness to perform job assignments and level of support provided for repair shop operations.Illustrative Examples of Work

-Performs repair work and preventive maintenance activities on fleet vehicles and heavy equipment and machinery.

-Assists with troubleshooting and diagnosing equipment malfunctions to determine needed repairs.

-Assists with rebuilding gas and diesel engines and repairing electrical, cooling, suspension and braking components and systems.

-Repairs and/or replaces heating and air-conditioning systems and components.

-Performs minor bodywork and paints fleet vehicles and heavy equipment when necessary.

-Travels to road construction sites and other locations to perform minor repairs and/or tow damaged equipment to the shop.

-Assists with repairing and/or rebuilding automatic and manual transmissions.

-Repairs and/or replaces drive train and steering system components.

-Inspects and repairs hydraulic devices and components on highway equipment and machinery.

-Repairs and overhauls equipment and small engines including lawn mowers and chainsaws.

-Repairs highway mowing equipment and removes and installs blades when necessary.

-Operates a variety of tools and equipment such as hand tools, jacks, chain hoists, air wrenches, grease racks, low boys, arc welders, cutting torches, drill presses, lathes, milling machines and grinders.

-Welds and fabricates metal parts and components when necessary to repair heavy equipment.

-Conducts safety and preventive maintenance inspections on fleet vehicles and heavy equipment and machinery to ensure they are in proper working order.

-Observes mechanical devices in operation and listens to their sounds to locate causes of trouble.

-Dismantles devices/parts to gain access to and remove defective parts, inspects for wear and repairs/replaces/rebuilds parts as needed.

-Keeps the tools and equipment clean, properly stored and in good working order.

-Checks equipment to make sure required repair work was performed correctly.

-Assists in making decisions on whether to repair equipment or junk for parts.

-Cleans and maintains the shop to comply with required safety regulations and TOSHA standards.

-Performs related work as required.Necessary Requirements of Work

Graduation from an accredited high school supplemented with additional coursework and training in auto and/or heavy equipment mechanics; considerable experience in diagnosing and performing repair work and preventive maintenance on fleet vehicles and heavy equipment; ability to weld and fabricate metals; sufficient physical strength to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job in a variety of weather conditions; good interpersonal and decision making skills; or any equivalent combination of education and/or experience to provide the following critical knowledge, abilities and skills:

-Considerable knowledge of heavy equipment mechanics including engine and drive train components, suspensions, fuel/exhaust systems, electrical systems, alignment/body work, brake systems and wheel/tire maintenance.

-Considerable knowledge of the Tennessee Department of Transportation safety rules and regulations.

-Considerable knowledge of routine preventive maintenance activities associated with road maintenance and mowing equipment.

-Considerable knowledge of hydraulic systems and components.

-Considerable knowledge of automotive heating and air conditioning systems and components.

-Considerable knowledge of TOSHA guidelines and regulations pertaining to heavy equipment repair shop and quarry operations including tag out procedures, hoisting and hydraulic lift machinery, material safety data sheets (MSDS), etc.

-Knowledge of safety precautions associated with heavy equipment repair and maintenance.

-Knowledge of welding various types of metals including the use of cutting torches, arc welders, stick welders and wire welders.

-Knowledge of record keeping procedures pertaining to safety inspections, mileage logs, and inventory.

-Ability to read and interpret manuals and schematics utilized for repair work.

-Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose equipment malfunctions and perform needed repairs.

-Ability to follow instructions and communicate effectively with the public and co-workers.

-Ability to perform the physically demanding aspects of the job in a variety of weather conditions.

-Skill in the use of power tools, hand tools, and automotive diagnostic equipment.

-Skill in the use of automotive shop equipment including low boys, grease racks, hoists, drill presses, etc.

-Skill in the use of welding equipment and fabricating metal parts and components.

-Skill in the operation of motor vehicles, mowing and road maintenance equipment.Necessary Special Requirements

-Possession of valid Tennessee Commercial Drivers License Class A preferred, and the ability to be insured at standard vehicle liability rates.Physical Requirements

-This is heavy work requiring considerable static, explosive, dynamic and trunk strength and requiring the exertion of up to 80 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects

-Work requires considerable flexibility, mobility and speed of limb movement

-Work requires considerable effort and stamina

-Work requires both gross body equilibrium and coordination for balancing, bending, stooping, kneeling and walking

-Work requires arm/ hand steadiness and manual and finger dexterity

-Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word

-Hearing is required to perceive information in both quiet and noisy environments and determine the direction of sounds

-Visual acuity is required for the inspection of small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, operation of office equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, color differentiation, and observing general surroundings and activities

-The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, temperature extremes, bodily fluids, oils and lubricants, noise and slippery surfacesMaury County Government
