Lone Star Legal Aid (LSLA) seeks a regular full time Paralegal II (job #343) for our Beaumont Branch Office.Lone Star Legal Aid (LSLA) is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit law firm and its mission is to protect and advance the civil rights of low-income Texans by providing advocacy, legal representation, and community education that ensure equal access to justice.Summary of Responsibilities This position requires that the employee work directly with applicants and clients in assessing and/or handling their legal problems, and with pro bono and contract lawyers under the supervision of the Pro Bono Litigation Coordinator. The employee may investigate client issues, conduct interviews, and make public presentations on relevant topics. The principle duties of this position are to: prepare requested reports, create educational materials and make public presentations; participate in agency and community office outreach efforts; attend and/or coordinate clinics or other events; recruit pro bono and contract lawyers as requested; recruit, train, and/or supervise lay volunteers; work closely with and problem solve for the client community, private bar associates, domestic violence organizations, and Lone Star Legal Aid staff; coordinate activities between local bar associations, State Bar of Texas, Texas Lawyers Care, Lone Star Legal Aid offices and similar organizations or associations; provide limited legal advice under the direct supervision of a licensed attorney; train branch office staff on all PAI related duties as requested; supervise referral of PAI cases from inception through closing; attend Pro Bono training and substantive law trainings as requested; perform all duties and responsibilities of Legal Secretary as requested by the attorney to whom individual is assigned; and perform other related duties as assigned. RequirementsMinimum Education and ExperienceTwo years of college, certificate from an accredited paralegal school or two years advocacy experience. Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts Degree preferred. Prior experience a plus.Minimum Skills and AbilitiesThis position requires strong communication skills both written and oral. It also requires good interviewing, problem solving, and negotiating skills; ability to work well under pressure and formulate plans of actions and make decisions quickly, as well as knowledge of the community service and social service providers, agencies, court system, and legal community. It also requires knowledge of family, domestic violence, public benefits, and poverty law, and familiarity with the delivery of legal services.
