In this role at American Airlines, you will interact with airline industry and sustainability experts, both inside and outside American, to refine and implement our decarbonization strategy and pathway to net zero emissions by 2050.

You will play a key role as part of a cross-American team focused on vetting opportunities to help American reach its goal to replace 10% of its jet fuel with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by 2030, which will include monitoring new SAF technologies on the horizon, advancing the company’s understanding of the SAF market, and helping to shape policies designed to advance that market, both in the U.S. and overseas.

This is an opportunity to learn about a promising new industry in the work to address climate change and to help American realize its emissions reductions strategy and goals, including its intermediate science-based based targets for 2035 and its goal to reach net zero emissions by 2050.

This role is part of the Sustainability Team, reporting into the Corporate and Government Affairs Division.

What you'll do

Support American’s decarbonization efforts by identifying opportunities for the company to work with existing and new SAF producers, through offtake agreements, technical partnerships and other means, and other companies working to decarbonize commercial aviation

Develop and implement innovative programs designed to help American’s customers reduce their emissions associated with air travel and cargo shipments

Help American monitor, shape and prepare for emerging SAF policies and benefit from existing SAF policy

Represent American in industry forums and task groups that are working to address issues related to the development of the SAF market, including book & claim, registries, carbon accounting, infrastructure, lifecycle analysis and greenhouse gas reduction claims

Maintain and update projections of future SAF supply and other decarbonization strategies, including new modes of aircraft propulsion, advances in airspace modernization and the carbon offset/removals markets

Provide ad hoc project management support for projects related to American’s decarbonization strategy

All you'll need for successMinimum Qualifications – Education & Prior Job Experience

Bachelor’s degree in engineering, chemistry or a related field, or equivalent experience/training

Preferred Qualifications – Education & Prior Job Experience

Master’s degree in engineering, chemistry or a related field and/or prior experience in renewable fuels

A minimum of 5 years of corporate work experience, preferably in a hard-to-abate industry

Knowledge and understanding of conventional and renewable fuels, with the ability to identify and articulate opportunities in the emerging SAF market

Familiarity with carbon accounting frameworks and trends

Skills, Licenses, and Certifications

Clear and strategic thinker with strong research skills, ability to analyze and understand complex topics

Collaborative, positive individual able to form productive relationships across the company

Highly motivated individual with a strong work ethic

Superior project management skills, including ability to develop plans and meet deadlines

Ability to shift priorities, achieve goals and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment

Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail

Proficiency with Microsoft Office
