Assesses health status by performing the medical history, physical examination and psychosocial assessment. Monitors laboratory, clinical radiographic and procedural data for daily rounds. Must visually evaluate data and prepare written information. Reviews the findings of the history and physical, pertinent laboratory data, radiographic data, plan for further diagnosis and therapeutic management as outlined in collaboration with the attending physician.Prevents, minimizes and manages symptoms/toxicities/health abnormalities related to disease or treatment in collaboration with physician and other allied personnel. Evaluates health care provided and modifies care as needed (under the supervision of a physician if medical acts are required). Provides psychological support to patients and families. Facilitates communication between patient/family and interdisciplinary team and coordinates services related to patient care. Schedules consultations, diagnostic tests or procedures, future appointments for patients in coordination with the attending physician.Identifies and provides patient and family educational needs regarding treatment management, evaluation and follow-up on clinical trials and research protocols through talking with patients and families person to person and by telephone and synthesizing information provided. Must be able to visually observe and assess patients by listening to them and/or their families describe their health condition. Must be able to work within a context of very intense interpersonal relationships, including patient, physician, co-workers and subordinates.Administers investigations and non-investigational medications, as indicated, following accepted professional and institutional procedures/guidelines. Collects and properly identifies special laboratory specimens as required by protocol by drawing blood and collecting specimens provided by patients, following accepted nursing and laboratory procedures/guidelines.Data CollectionAssesses patients for protocol eligibility in inpatient, outpatient and community settings through personal interviews with patients. Requires mobility to all patient care settings both inpatient and outpatient. Requires talking on the phone with patients in their home communities, taking hand-written notes, and retrieving and visually reading patient's medical record or retrieving laboratory, x-ray, etc., reports on computer.Coordinates, evaluates and follows patient's participation in clinical trials, research protocols, cancer prevention studies and high risk screening programs through personal interviews by mobility to inpatient hospital rooms and clinic exam rooms and on the telephone with patients and families and by retrieval and visual review of medical records daily.Schedules tests required throughout the treatment episode by manually completing scheduling request forms by mobility to clinic where patient is seen and writing requests.Obtains pharmacology and other required laboratory specimens for research and study purposes by drawing blood (which requires maintaining controlled, steady arm and hand posture) following accepted institutional procedures or collecting specimens provided by patient directly and/or via other sources, e.g., Operating Room, etc.Collaborates with multidisciplinary team individually and in group meetings in monitoring and evaluating patient and family response to the treatment protocol or research study by providing verbal and written or computerized reports.Assists primary investigator in collection and evaluation of data collected from all research endeavors by retrieving and visually reading data from medical record in clinic, office or Medical Records and entering via keyboard into computers in office or transcribing data by and onto Case Report forms.Evaluates response to treatment, grading toxicities and adverse treatment reactions through personal interviews by mobility to inpatient room or clinic exam room from office to take with patient, by visually monitoring the medical record and or by talking with patient and or family members and local physicians on the telephone.Reports treatment responses, toxicities and adverse treatment reactions to protocol/research sponsors and the Institutional Review Board (IRB) by providing regular written or computerized reports which are to be walked to office supplied for sponsors and to IRB office as required.Adheres to institutional and visional guidelines by entering data into a data collection system, either by writing on forms devised for this purpose or entering into computer via keyboard.Collaborates in executing/evaluating the design of research tools and data analysis by sitting at computer and devising programs based on personal interviews with medical personnel and data analysis in inpatient, clinic and office setting located throughout the institution.Ensures/maintains error free, compliant and comprehensive protocols/projects. Independently reports issues/problems consistent with institutional guidelines, Code of Federal regulations and ICH Guidelines for Good Clinical Practice (ICH-GCP). Acts to promote/contribute to cross service activities as appropriate. Integrates regulatory policies and procedures into all areas of protocol management. Audits related to assigned studies consistently reflect accuracy and integrity.Professional EducationProvides professional and ancillary staff education to ensure the safe management of care for patients and families by clearly presenting formal and informal verbal in-services in clinics and inpatient units and by providing clearly understood written and/or computerized directions to hospital and clinic staff as each new protocol is introduced.Preceptor of research nurses and coordinators.EDUCATIONRequired: Degree requirements as defined by the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) as required for clinical licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant.EXPERIENCEPreferred:At least 1 year of experience in Advanced Practice Provider role.LICENSURE / CERTIFICATIONRequired:Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) to function as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant.
