SummaryThe primary purpose of the Student Extern position is to assist in conducting laboratory research projects. Assist supervisor with research projects and general laboratory tasks. Exercise control over the preparation, processing and management of research procedures and resources. Responsible for assisting other laboratory personnel in experimental procedures. Must be physically able to walk from room to room to access laboratory equipment and also be able to bend over and open boxes of supplies. Responsible for analyzing laboratory data for accuracy and able to take corrective action when necessary in case of equipment malfunction. Maintain and update data ledgers to correctly reflect laboratory findings. Must be able to communicate experimental results to supervisors.Key Functions/job specific competencies
Assist supervisor as required in basic laboratory research projects.
Prepare solutions and tissue preparation for experiments.
Help other laboratory personnel coordinate and implement experimental procedures and assays. This process will require the ability to read and follow written instructions and protocols. Will be available at all times to locate and maintain laboratory supplies.
Collect and maintain laboratory data in computer systems.
Provide assistance in the preparation of materials for scientific presentations.
Will require delivering laboratory samples and materials to various laboratories in other buildings.
Assist supervisor and other laboratory personnel in routine maintenance of laboratory equipment.
Assist in special projects when necessary including other departmental projects.
Assist in the ordering of laboratory supplies and maintaining purchasing records of such supplies.
