OverviewCommunications creates and provides strategic communications to the Laboratory’s internal and external stakeholders and collaborators. It sets and implements a cohesive strategy to amplify the visibility of PNNL's research and develops standards and efforts that communicate PNNL’s value proposition. In doing so, Communications enhances the Laboratory’s institutional reputation and science and technology agenda. Further, Communications drives employee-focused communications; leads media and outreach to external stakeholders; supports research through robust technical editing, formatting, and graphics support; and protects the Laboratory's reputation through issues management and transparency with news media.ResponsibilitiesJob Description:The scientific and technical editor is critical to the sustained quality of PNNL’s scientific and technical content. This staff member provides thoughtful editorial review and document design, understands and implements advanced formatting techniques, creates templates that adhere to the PNNL style and brand, demonstrates mastery of writing and editing tools (e.g., Microsoft Office [particularly Word], Adobe, and LaTeX), and works closely with diverse project teams on high-value deliverables.This staff member edits and formats communications products such as grant proposals, planning documents, books, brochures, bibliographies, web content, journal abstracts and articles, technical reports, magazine and newspaper articles, newsletters, educational materials, posters, press releases, regulatory documents, scripts, and training materials.The staff member is accountable for ensuring the quality of final copy and that copy is error free and adheres to the applicable style guide (e.g., Chicago Manual of Style, Associated Press Stylebook, and specific journal requirements) or PNNL style guidelines. The staff member ensures that documents conform to relevant formatting guidelines and templates.If you have strong organizational skills, are deadline driven, and have a talent for providing superb editing and formatting support, then we want to talk to you!Key Responsibilities

Works with subject matter experts to ensure that documentation is accurate, up to date, and complete

Remedies grammatical, typographical, capitalization, citation, and punctuation errors across various content types

Formats content across various deliverables, templates, and projects, using advanced features of Microsoft Word and PowerPoint

Designs documents such as Word or Adobe fillable forms, Word templates, etc.

Checks and formats bibliographic references, in some cases using EndNote or similar software, in collaboration with other team members and researchers

Assures accuracy of language and compliance with writing style and format guidelines

Standardizes and ensures consistent tone, style, and format appropriate to each deliverable

Alters word choice, acronym usage, and punctuation to clarify meaning, but maintains the intent of the writer; makes and explains stylistic suggestions

Fosters collegial relationships with writers, other editors, project managers, and partners across the Lab

Verifies that quotes, illustrations, tables, and data are correctly referenced within the document

Verifies that correct standard or boilerplate language is included

Assures that copy meets layout and format requirements (e.g., a journal article is formatted to comply with the target journal’s submission requirements)

Uses appropriate tools and software to notify writers and editors of necessary changes (e.g., tracked changes in Microsoft Word and comment tool in Adobe Acrobat)

Suggests ways highly technical language can be rephrased to be more direct, readable, and easily understood by end users

Learns and implements state-of-the-art communications tools and channels into new or established workflows

QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:

BS/BA and 5+ years of relevant work experience -OR-

MS/MA and 3+ years of relevant work experience

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, or a science relevant to PNNL’s research.

Three years of related experience providing document formatting and design support, copyediting, or technical editing of various deliverables (e.g., technical reports, procedures, journal articles, grant proposals, flyers, scientific posters, websites, and PowerPoint presentations).

Excellent writing and editing skills, including the ability to proo content for spelling, grammar, punctuation, and style.

Strong copyediting skills and the ability to apply various style guides (e.g., Chicago Manual of Style and AP Stylebook).

Advanced Microsoft Office skills, including use of and creation of templates, content controls, forms, building blocks, and styles.

Demonstrated ability to produce large and complex documents using Microsoft Word and Adobe Acrobat in a collaborative and deadline-driven environment.

Demonstrated ability to manage and complete complex editorial tasks while adhering to strict deadlines.

Experience with content management systems and knowledge management systems; demonstrated ability learning new technologies and applications.

Intense focus on and commitment to detail and accuracy of work.

Demonstrated ability to work in a self-directed manner in a highly dynamic, collaborative, and professional environment.

Experience presenting to, or working directly with, researchers to teach best practices in editing, formatting, and storytelling.

Proficiency with LaTeX.
