The Boeing Company is looking for a Flight Vehicle Management Systems Integrated Product Team Sr. Manager for a one-of-a-kind aircraft technology flight demonstration program to join us in one of the following locations: the greater Seattle area (Renton, WA, Tukwila, WA, or Everett, WA), greater St. Louis area (Hazelwood, MO or Berkeley, MO), Southern California (Huntington Beach, CA, or Long Beach, CA), or the Potomac Region (Herndon, VA or Manassas, VA).

This senior engineer manager will lead the Flight Vehicle Management System (VMS) Integrated Product Team (IPT) and is accountable to the Program Manager and supports the Chief Program Engineer for leading a multi-disciplined team assigned responsibility for developing the air vehicle's vehicle management system and avionics/vehicle software system modifications needed. This IPT is composed of guidance, navigation and control engineers and members from avionics, integrated software and hardware systems development technical disciplines with loaned-in support from business operations, supplier management and engineering necessary to accomplish the assigned statement of work (SOW).

The VMS IPT Leader is assigned authority and allocated budget to perform these activities as derived from the program's work scope and defined in the team charter/team execution plan. Supports the Program Integration Office, Chief Engineer Office and Systems Engineering and Test (SEIT)/Aircraft Level Integration Team (ALIT) Leader identifying/managing risks and opportunities, and coordinating staffing needs.

The VMS IPT Leader will ensure customer satisfaction on all vehicle management system and avionics/vehicle software system modification tasks while maintaining close working relationships with internal and external customers.

The successful candidate will need strong oral and written communication skills, the ability to resolve cross-functional technical issues, be able to work in a fast-paced and dynamic, prototype-development environment, and must be a self-starter with the ability to work both independently and across multiple Integrated Product Teams (IPTs) and other program teams to support program start-up and execution.

Travel of 25% - 50% of the time may be required for the role.

Position Responsibilities:

  • VMS IPT Leader for rapid prototype development and flight testing of crewed full-size technology flight demonstrator of novel airplane configuration (Transonic Truss Braced Wing - Sustainable Flight Demonstrator); including guidance, navigation and control algorithms, hardware and software for the air vehicle.
  • Leads the VMS IPT accountable to the program manager and supporting the chief program engineer and SEIT/ALIT. Directs, coordinates and is accountable for all VMS new and modified software, avionics and interfacing hardware IPT tasks using state of the art model-based engineering practices.
  • Responsible for working with the software architect and associated software team to identify software system impacts from modifying the air vehicle and to appropriately develop remedies for those system impacts
  • Staff program IPT with highly talented, domain expertise in new and modified vehicle management system development; including guidance/navigation & control models, algorithms, hardware, software, grounded in safety and airworthiness principles and practices.
  • Plans, organizes, directs, coordinates, and controls the efforts for meeting the IPT's cost, schedule, risk, and technical commitments
  • Cost account manager responsible for the IPT's cost, schedule and performance baselines. Reports on variances and develops recovery plans
  • Integrates VMS algorithms, hardware and software requirements for a successful air vehicle modification program throughout the lifecycle by providing cross-functional, cross-IPT coordination, communication, and issue resolution
  • Responsible for IPT's content for program technical reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR, Modification Readiness Review)
  • Leads IPT's risk and opportunity mitigation activities and supports technical and cost trades
  • Responsible for development and presentation of team results to program management and Boeing senior leadership
  • Coordinates with the SEIT/ALIT Leader on the requirements for, and planning and execution of the Modification Readiness Review
  • Member of the Program Management Office leadership team responsible for making program execution decisions to meet program's technical requirements, cost and schedule baselines
  • Leads multi-site VMS IPT supporting cross-enterprise engineering development including technical resources across ET&T, BCA, BDS, BGS, and Aurora Flight Sciences subsidiary
  • Leads VMS IPT collaboration and coordination across multiple govt agencies and sites including NASA and FAA and with program partners and suppliers, as appropriate


This position allows telecommuting. The selected candidate will be required to perform some work onsite at one of the listed location options.

This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a "U.S. Person" as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. "U.S. Person" includes U.S. Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):
  • Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry
  • Experience as a subsystems or Vehicle Management Systems (VMS) manager or experience working closely as a manager with these teams
  • Experience leading through influence and partnering with cross-functional teams on projects, transactions or initiatives
  • 5+ years of experience leading teams to execute to safety, quality, delivery & cost commitments/targets


Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
  • 5+ years of technical leadership experience in a combination of developing and integrating vehicle management systems and avionics/vehicle software systems
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering
  • Multi-program experience in Vehicle Management System requirements definition, design, integration and flight test.
  • Exceptional people skills with proven ability in change management and leading an innovative, collaborative growth-oriented culture with an embedded foundation of quality and safety
  • Keen ability to foster and build relationships with key internal and external stakeholders - customers, suppliers, government, and industry leaders, and across Boeing enterprise
  • Proactively and quickly makes sense of complex technical issues; responds effectively to complex and ambiguous situations; communicates complicated information simply
  • Commercial Aircraft Modifications technical leadership experience; Aircraft Development Program, Prototyping, and Technology Maturation leadership experience
  • Experience in work package planning, managing cost and schedule, and reporting variances
