POSITION PURPOSE The primary purpose of this position is to provide the appropriate environment to support outstanding biomedical research directed towards significant human health issues and nonhuman primate (NHP) health and biology.Under the general supervision of a Principal Investigators (PI) in the Physiology and Biophysics Dept., this position serves a critical function in furthering research on eye movement function. The Research Technologist 1 performs independently, and in collaboration with PI, the execution of behavioral and electrophysiological studies with nonhuman primates (NHPs) according to established protocols. This position provides experimental specialties in setting up tests, collecting data, and supporting animal procedures as needed. The Research Technologist 1 must demonstrate a desire to minimize, or eliminate, any unnecessary delays in the research.Strong interpersonal and communication skills are required as this position interfaces with colony and veterinarian staff in ensuring that NHPs involved in studies are cared for in accordance with all regulations and standard operating procedures (SOPs).DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Under the general supervision of PI or other laboratory members:

NHP surgery

Assist with surgeries on NHPs based on research initiatives and goals

Identify appropriate measures, real-time, during surgeries to ensure health and safety of NHP based on research protocols

Perform precise clinical procedures based on research protocol and SOPNHP Experimental Research Methodology

Assist in designing, developing and executing research methodology for NHP experiments

Assist in developing training methods and working with NHP to perform oculomotor behavior during visual stimulation using an established process.

Calibrate the eye-movement measurement system using the computer, phase detectors, and function generators.

Assist in developing experimental testing protocols including incorporating new innovative procedures.NHP Research Analysis

Maintain digital data records based on research protocols and SOPAnimal Care

Feed and monitor animals during experimental behavioral sessions.

Set-up and clean-up before and after experiments.

Maintain animal records in accordance with WaNPRC policies.

Interface with veterinary staff to maintain optimal health of experimental animals.

Assess animal’s suitability for experimental protocols.General Laboratory Maintenance

Interact with appropriate center support staff for repair and manufacture of specialized equipment. Order supplies and equipment as needed.

Maintain an orderly, clean laboratory environment.

Stay current on all required training.

Perform other duties as assigned. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Two years experience as a Laboratory Technician II, or equivalent; OR a Bachelors Degree in an appropriate field of science or technology such as Life Science, Biology, or Neuroscience

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Demonstrated ability in training NHP to perform neurological tasks in a research setting in a timely fashion.

Experience with direct handling of NHP in a post-baccalaureate research setting.

Must be trained to assist in sterile and non-sterile neurosurgery of NHP.

Ability to work well independently and in collaboration with a diverse staff and with research investigators.

Experience working with electronics, neuro physiological research equipment, software, and surgical tools.

Excellent written and oral communication skills.· CONDITITONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Employment is contingent on successful outcome of background investigation prior to hire. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of health assessment at the UW's Employee Health Clinic. The health assessment may include but is not limited to tuberculosis clearance, measles clearance, serum banking, immunizations such as tetanus and vaccinia, physical exam and/or review of work health history, x-rays, and/or assessment to wear positive or negative respiratory protective equipment. These health assessments will be repeated periodically during work assignment.

This position may be required to work with and take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially infectious agents. Specific precautions may include wearing protective clothing. Employee is personally responsible for following health & safety and security policies/procedures, and staying current on all required training. Blood-borne pathogen training and compliance with all WaNPRC and UW security policies is also mandatory. This position involves handling nonhuman primates.

Employee will work set schedule but early morning, evening, AND/OR weekends may be necessary to accomplish workload or deadline-driven projects.
