Department faculty provide clinical services in 5 hospitals, 14 primary care locations, and several outpatient sites in addition to telepsychiatry consultations to more than 150 clinics in Washington and beyond. As the only academic psychiatry department serving the five state WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, Idaho), the Department’s highly competitive residency training program is largely responsible for developing the mental health workforce in the Pacific Northwest. The Department’s robust research portfolio totals $67 million in grants and contracts per year for projects ranging from clinical neurosciences to treatment development to health policy and population health. The Department is recognized as an international leader in developing, testing, and implementing Collaborative Care, an integrated care model increasingly seen as a solution for population-based mental health care. Psychiatry is the third largest department in the School of Medicine and the largest non-divisioned department. The overall annual operations funding from all sources is over $130 million.The Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences within the UW School of Medicine currently has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Technologist 1 (NE S SEIU 925 RT). The Coffey Lab at the University of Washington is located in the MIRECC at the VA Puget Sound in Seattle. The successful applicant will join a dynamic group of faculty, postdoctoral, graduate, and undergraduate students in the MIRECC investigating the molecular, behavioral, and cellular mechanisms underlying opioid addiction and other mental illnesses. This position’s work will be split between the daily maintenance of a behavioral neuroscience laboratory and performing behavioral and physiological neuroscience experiments with mice and rats under the supervision of senior lab personnel.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES For many duties, training will be provided
Handle and weigh rats
Assist with behavioral studies on rodents including drug injections and rodent drug self-administration
Assist with MiniScope, photometry, optogenetics experiments
Assist with rodent surgery
Perform data analysis using Matlab, Python, DeepLabCut, etc.
Maintain glassware supplies using autoclaves and laboratory dishwashers.
Prepare laboratory reagents including media and other solutions.
Perform histology on tissue sections and whole brains (tissue clearing, immunohistochemistry, RNAscope, etc).
Assist with microscopy, including fluorescent microscopy.
Work under supervision with both biohazards and hazardous chemicals.
Collect, record, and verify accuracy of data; organize data; maintain laboratory notebooks and other records
Order chemicals and supplies for laboratory operations
Help write, and maintain compliance with, research safety and animal use protocols
Help train and mentor undergraduate research assistants
Use Microsoft Office including Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
Participate in laboratory meetings.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Two years experience as a Laboratory Technician II, or equivalent; OR a Bachelors Degree in an appropriate field of science or technology.

At least one year of experience working in a research laboratory using relevant skills.
Undergraduate level knowledge of chemistry, biology, and/or neuroscience.
