University Advancement’s (UA) mission is to inspire and increase engagement and philanthropy for Fresno State by putting alumni, friends, and the philanthropic partner at the center of what University Advancement does, thereby focusing on the individual being the hero of their own story. UA fosters pride and connections that result in engagement and giving for Fresno State. The division works with alumni, friends, and external stakeholders to broaden the resources available to the University, thereby strengthening the impact of higher education to prepare the next generation of leaders and to elevate our beloved San Joaquin Valley, the state, and beyond. Providing engagement opportunities is a primary role of the division, with every interaction focused on increasing interaction to Fresno State and its mission. UA ensures that a strong brand inspires and deepens the University’s bond with the public it serves. As such, it advances communications that uplift the image and reputation of the University and supports the University’s strategic plan.

What you will be doing:

As the Director of Planned and Principal Giving, your primary responsibility lies in managing and facilitating the creation of both deferred and outright gifts to Fresno State. This involves extensive collaboration with philanthropic partners, financial and legal professionals, UA staff, and campus leadership to strategize and execute outreach and solicitation efforts on behalf of the university. You are also tasked with providing support to volunteer and philanthropic partner groups, ensuring cohesive efforts in fundraising.

Your role extends to securing both deferred and outright gifts by fostering relationships with prospective philanthropic partners, allied professionals, advancement staff, and other members of the Fresno State community. This involves cultivating these partnerships to negotiate and close charitable life income arrangements, bequests, planned giving vehicles, and other forms of gifts.

Planned and deferred giving represents a significant growth area for Fresno State under the leadership of University Advancement, with a targeted goal of securing over 30% of the annual fundraising goal. In this capacity, you play a pivotal role in networking with financial and legal professionals, engaging with emeriti faculty and staff, and collaborating closely with colleagues across University Advancement to achieve these objectives. Your dedication and strategic approach are vital in advancing the philanthropic mission of Fresno State.

The anticipated yearly salary range for this position is: $110,000 - $130,000 based on experience.

How you will be spending your time:

Participating as a member of the Executive Team to provide recommendations, initiatives, and strategies to achieve the annual fundraising goal.

Managing and overseeing the technical support to philanthropic partners, their advisors, other outside allied professionals, faculty and staff, and UA staff on the structuring, benefits, and implications of various planned gift arrangements.

Leading in educating advancement staff, volunteers and University leaders on the principles and techniques of planned giving; develop and implement strategies and guidelines to support operations.

Assisting in developing, planning, and executing marketing planned gift opportunities to alumni, faculty, staff, and friends of Fresno State.

Leading with the recruitment and stewardship of Heritage Society members and all responsibilities associated with the Legacy Society.

Prospective philanthropic partner identification: Occasionally reviewing annual giving records, public information, and volunteer suggestions for potential philanthropic partners related to planned giving efforts.

Prospective philanthropic partner qualification: Frequently meeting with potential philanthropic partners to qualify their capacity and propensity for planned giving.

Prospective philanthropic partner cultivation: Frequently planning and implementing strategies to move potential philanthropic partners toward a planned gift decision.

Prospective philanthropic partner solicitation: Frequently developing and presenting planned gift proposals to potential philanthropic partners to meet or exceed annual goals.

Principal gifts: Occasionally working with senior administrators to develop strategies and proposals for gifts greater than $1,000,000 that may include planned giving vehicles.

Philanthropic partner stewardship: Regularly interacting with philanthropic partners to ensure consistent and meaningful stewardship of gifts received.

Special events: Occasionally organizing or supporting special events designed to identify, cultivate, or steward potential planned giving philanthropic partners.

Boards and volunteer engagement: Frequently interacting with volunteer leaders and boards to engage them in the mission of Fresno State.

What you will bring: 

Bachelor's degree required from a regionally accredited institution.

Minimum of five years of increasingly responsible and successful fundraising experience or professional experience with transferable skills such as sales, marketing, or public relations.

A minimum of two years of professional fundraising experience with success in planned giving or professional experience in financial or legal services with experience in gift and estate planning, trust management and charitable tax laws.

Demonstrated track record in working with individuals and groups, ability to work as a member of a team, recognition of the importance of education to individuals and society.

Exposure to management, including budgetary responsibilities.

Experience with a nonprofit organization.

Experience with comprehensive campaigns, major gift solicitation, or constituent relations.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's or other advanced degree preferred.

Experience/background in higher education.

Experience with alumni/donor databases and campus applications such as Advance, Reeher or Raiser’s Edge.
