Direct Support Professional (DSP)

Bism Supported Living LLC is looking for a team player who is caring, compassionate, enthusiastic and wants to make a difference in younger adults lives. Provides direct care to those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Performing personal care tasks, including assistance with basic personal hygiene and grooming, feeding, and ambulation, medical monitoring, and health care related tasks.

Direct Support Staff/ Direct Support Professional will be responsible for but not limited to the following, understanding that it will vary with each individual:

Conduct assessments of the person being supported.

Minimize risks of endangerment to the health, safety, and well being of the individuals being supported.

Perform first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), operate 24-hour emergency assistance systems, as appropriate to the need with respect to any specific consumer

Achieve the intended results of the service being performed.

Participate in the IPP/ISP (if applicable) development and circle of support meetings.

Being open and understanding to different methods of learning and teaching.

Monitor individual’s health issues and supervise and safeguard medications as well as monitor side effects.

Develop and monitor daily program plans and reports.

Be prepared for emergencies and monitor the safety of the person being supported including special incident reports and follow-up.

Assistance in finding, modifying, and maintaining a home.

Facilitating circles of support to encourage the development of unpaid and natural supports in the community.

Advocacy and self advocacy facilitation.

Assist with development of employment and educational goals.

Securing and maintaining adaptive equipment and supplies that may be required by the individual being supported with the assistance from various resources.

Assist with developing social, behavioral, and daily living skills training and support.

Assist individuals in applying for resources such as Medi-Cal, Social-Security, Access Services, Cal-Fresh and any other resource available to them.

Support the individual in coordinating their activities of daily living, such as meal preparation, including: planning, shopping, cooking, and storage of food.

Assist and/or make sure that routine household activities aimed at maintaining a clean and safe home are performed on a daily basis.

Assist with locating, scheduling, and attending appropriate medical services.

Assist with selecting and moving into a home; locating and choosing suitable house mates if applicable; and acquiring household furnishings.

Assisting the individual being supported with becoming aware of and effectively using the transportation system, police, fire, and emergency help available in the community to the general public.

Assist with creating a disaster plan and 24-hour emergency assistance, including direct service in response to calls for assistance. This service also includes assisting the individual being supported to acquire, use, and maintain devices (i.e.: cellphones, Ipads, etc.) needed to summon immediate assistance when threats to health, safety, and well-being occur or actual emergencies are taking place.

Identifying and reporting abuse to appropriate agencies in a timely manner, family, supervisor, director, vendor of TPIM and or those in the circle of support to whom which the person being supported wants to share the information.

Assist individuals with financial management, budgeting, and safeguards.

Must understand people first language.

Must be knowledgeable about Title 17, the philosophy of The Power In Me, organizational structure, and the program design.

Must be: responsible, friendly, patient, understanding, adapts easily to changes, active and willing to participate in activities, cooperative, and always willing to go there and beyond.

Must be compatible and have a good relationship with the individual/s that is/are being supported.

Assist and support with animal companions (i.e. Canines).

Must have a positive and professional relationship and be able to work collaboratively with others in a multi-agency, interdisciplinary configuration (e.g. other regional centers, courts, mental health systems, probation), for the successful support of the individual.

Support those individuals that are attending substance abuse prevention and/or treatment programs (if applicable).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Must be at least 18 years of age

Experience is preferred in a related field

Valid Social Security Number

Eligibility for employment in this country

Acceptable background and fingerprint screening by the Department of Justice and FBI

Acceptable Department of Motor Vehicle record and Driver’s License

Physical and TB test clearance within the past 12 months

Must meet the age requirement and experience for the position that he/she is applying to

Should have the skills, training, or education necessary to establish and maintain a constructive and appropriate personal relationship with the individual being supported

Must be creative and open minded to make sure that activities and resources that are being provided are cost efficient and beneficial to the person being supported

Must agree to complete a minimum of 12 hours of continuing education each year

First Aid/CPR training course approved by the American Red Cross

Strong commitment to provide a quality program

Must be willing to adapt to the different roles and responsibilities as the needs and services of individuals may change or vary

DSP I and DSP II (will be required if the individual being supported takes medications).
