Appointment Type:Temporary Exempt (TEX): This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer.About Us:The Department of Building Inspection (DBI (https://www.sf.gov/departments/department-building-inspection) ) oversees the effective, efficient, fair and safe enforcement of City building, housing, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and disability access codes for San Francisco’s more than 200,000 buildings. This Position is located at 49 South Van Ness.Under direct supervision, the Permit Technician I performs a wide variety of routine paraprofessional, technical, administrative and specialized work involved in receiving and reviewing building, electrical, plumbing and related permit applications for completeness; processing records requests; and creating inspection records; making appointments; maintaining field inspection lists; and providing routine permit-related information concerning building permit requirements, codes, ordinances and inspection procedures.Role Description:​​​​​​​1. Assist with receiving and preparing notices of violations referred from Building Inspection Division, Plumbing Inspection Division, and Electrical Inspection Division to director’s hearing process, including mailings of order of abatements and other related documents to stakeholders.2.Process cases for city attorney referral and abatement appeals.3.Accept and generate complaints for vacant building ordinances and direct calls to inspection service staff.4.Processes payments related to the abatement of cases and related fees including vacant building registration fees. Distribute paperwork to appropriate inspection staff and stakeholders.5.Receives and resolves a variety of problems, issues and complaints; refers more complex or misdirected issues to appropriate division and staff.6.Monitor specialized email accounts and respond as appropriate.7.Assists and interacts with external and internal stakeholders at the counter, email and via phone.8.Processes fee collection: calculates, collects, records and balances monetary transactions.9.Generates and maintains various records, documents and data.

Minimum Qualifications:These minimum qualifications establish the education, training, experience, special skills and/or license(s) which are required for employment in the classification. Please note, additional qualifications (i.e., special conditions) may apply to a particular position and will be stated on the exam/job announcement.Experience:Two (2) years of verifiable clerical experience including interacting with the public, preparing and maintaining a variety of records and/or documents, filing, use of office equipment, public contact and processing of incoming and outgoing mail.Substitution:Completion of a clerical training program of at least two-hundred and forty (240) hours may substitute for six (6) months of the required experience.Completion of fifteen (15) semester or twenty-four (24) quarter units of coursework from an accredited college or university may substitute for six (6) months of the required experience.Additional Information Regarding Employment with the City and County of San Francisco:
