The Direct Support Professional (DSP) plays a crucial role in providing assistance and support to individuals with developmental disabilities, ensuring their well-being and enhancing their quality of life. This position involves working closely with clients to promote independence, facilitate daily living activities, and foster a supportive environment. The DSP is responsible for implementing individualized care plans and advocating for the rights of residents while maintaining a safe and respectful atmosphere. This individual is on the autism spectrum with a good ability to communicate verbally and emerging social skills. It is highly desired that the individual we hire is adept at bringing out social interaction and engaging someone who struggles to connect with people. Modeling social behavior and what it is like to be a "friend" is what we are going for.
Responsibilities
Direct support professional/personal assistant
-Previous experience in working 1:1 with individuals on the autistic spectrum.
-Reliable, safe vehicle for regular outings (mileage reimbursed) and excellent driving record.
Skill development and support:
- Teaching skills that have not yet been mastered.
- Modeling and reinforcing healthy and safe household care/house cleaning and cooking.
- Personal care (e.g., reminders for showering, shaving, dressing, eating, etc.)
- Providing positive practice of new, emerging or existing skills.
Additional duties may include but are not limited to:
- Documentation of progress.
- Completion of State-required training and certification
Qualifications and Skills
High school graduates WITH experience are encouraged to apply.
Successful candidates will have strong background in working with people on the spectrum and ability to initiate conversation and socialization with someone who struggles in that area.
Experience in art, computer assisted art a big plus.
Skills
Knowledge of HIPAA regulations to ensure the confidentiality of client information.
Experience in memory care or working with individuals with developmental disabilities is required.
Proficient in patient observation techniques to monitor health and behavioral changes effectively.
CPR certification is required to ensure readiness in emergency situations.
Excellent caregiving skills, including the ability to cook nutritious meals tailored to individual dietary needs.
Strong communication skills to effectively interact with clients, families, and team members.
Compassionate attitude with a commitment to enhancing the lives of individuals with disabilities.
This role requires dedication, empathy, and a proactive approach to supporting individuals in achieving their personal goals while ensuring their safety and dignity at all times.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $28.00 - $30.00 per hour
Expected hours: 8 – 12 per week - May work into closer to 20+ hours per week when primary DSP retires, which should be within the next year or so.
