The Contra County Public Works Department (CCCPWD) is responsible for the maintenance and operation of over 650 miles of roads, 79 miles of streams and channels, and over 150 County buildings. CCCPWD services include parks and recreation, sandbag distribution, flood control, road and facilities maintenance, and storm water management.

CCCPWD operates two airports, Buchanan Field Airport in Concord, and Byron Airport in Byron. CCCPWD strives for continuous improvement to deliver cost effective, safe reliable and sustainable projects, programs, and quality services.

The Contra Costa County Public Works Department is seeking to fill six (6) vacancies for the Equipment Mechanic position within the Fleet Services Division.

The Fleet Services Division resides within Contra Costa County Public Works Department and provides various services to County departments including the acquisition, preventative maintenance, repair, and disposal of fleet vehicles and equipment.

Under general supervision of the Fleet Services Manager, the Equipment Mechanic performs diagnoses and makes mechanical repairs to automotive vehicles, trucks, road maintenance and construction equipment, and related work as required. This class is responsible for the general maintenance, upkeep and repair of a wide variety of vehicles and equipment, including the repair of tractors, graders, backhoes, rollers and other types of highway maintenance and construction equipment, service vehicles, trucks, and pumps and equipment. The Equipment Mechanic may be required to make repairs in field locations to return equipment to a safe and operational status.

A major goal of the County is to reduce its carbon footprint by replacing internal combustion engine vehicles with zero emission technology vehicles and the Fleet Services Division will be in the forefront to lead that effort.

We are looking for someone who:

-Possesses a good working knowledge of hydraulic, vac-hydraulic and air-brake systems

-Has the ability to detect conditions that could affect the safe operation of automotive vehicles and construction equipment

-Will work cooperatively with coworkers, lead technicians and members of customer departments

-Can safely operate tools and equipment

-Will keep abreast of safe working practices and proper procedures and uses of power and hand tools

-Possess a complete understanding of the materials, tools and practices used in automotive and heavy equipment maintenance and repair

-able to lift 50 lbs and stand for 80% of their daily time

What you will typically be responsible for:

-Inspecting automobiles, trucks, buses, tractors, backhoes, graders, rollers, and various other mechanical equipment

-Diagnosing mechanical and electrical issues and making necessary repairs

-Road testing vehicles to identify and troubleshoot problems

-Working safely

-Investigating computer codes on light and heavy equipment engines

-Keeping the shop and work area organized and clean

-Inputting detailed, computerized notes for service and repairs

Desirable Qualifications:

-Currently possess a valid California Commerical Driver's License, Class B

-Accomplished Welder, both stick and wire

-Excellent customer service

-Hands on problem solver

-Experience working for a public sector agency

-A.S.E. Master Certification

-Heavy Duty/Construction Equipment experience

The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill future openings for up to six (6) months.

Minimum Qualifications

-License Required: Possession of a valid California motor vehicle operator's license. Out of state valid motor vehicle operator's license will be accepted during the applicant process.

-A valid California motor vehicle license Class B must be acquired prior to completing probationary period and must be maintained throughout employment with Contra Costa County.

-Experience: Either

1) Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as an Automotive or Equipment Mechanic and one year of full-time or its equivalent journey level Automotive or Equipment Mechanic experience; or

2) Three years of journey level Automotive or Equipment Mechanic experience.
