Contra Costa County’s Public Works Department is seeking qualified individuals to fill multiple Stationary Engineer (Building Engineer/HVAC Mechanic) vacancies. All interested and qualified individuals are encouraged to apply.

Stationary Engineers operate, maintain, and repair HVAC systems in a variety of buildings throughout the County. Responsibilities include resolving customer complaints related to airflow, heating, cooling, and ventilation; responding to HVAC related alarms and elevator malfunctions; calibrating and maintaining pneumatic, electric, and computerized (DDC system) controls; inspecting chillers and ensuring containment and proper handling of refrigerants, which may contain chlorofluorocarbons and other hazardous materials; and other related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

License Required: Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License. Out of state motor vehicle operator’s license will be accepted during the application process.

Certificates: Must be Type 1 or Type 2 certified for Handling Chlorofluorocarbons at the time of application, and obtain a Federal Universal Certification for Handling Chlorofluorocarbons within nine (9) months from the date of hire.

Education: 1) Possession of a high school diploma, G.E.D. equivalency or high school proficiency certificates and (2) satisfactory completion of at least one college-level course in BOTH basic refrigeration and electricity OR completion of a HVAC trade school program.

Experience: Two (2) years of full-time or its equivalent experience as a stationary engineer or operating engineer maintaining and repairing HVAC equipment.

Substitution for College Courses: An additional three (3) years of full time (or its equivalent) experience as a Stationary Engineer or Operating Engineer, maintaining and repairing HVAC equipment; one (1) year of which must have been at the journey level

Substitution for Experience: Completion of a HVAC apprenticeship certification program

Other Requirement: Applicants must be able to obtain the Detention Facility Clearance to work in the detention facilities
