Summary This position is located in the United States Department of Agriculture, Agriculture Research Service, Ruminant Diseases & Immunology Research Unit in Ames, IA. In this position, you will actively participate in one or more phases of the research process by performing a variety of technical duties in a laboratory, Dairy farm or greenhouse environment. This is a term, time-limited appointment with an initial duration no less than 13 months and can be extended up to a total of 4 years. Responsibilities Maintains, calibrates and modifies equipment and automated systems used for test and evaluation procedures. Tabulates, statistically analyzes and summarizes data using personal computers and software packages. Collects, prepares, evaluates and verifies samples including dairy samples and supporting records. Disposes of waste material both chemical and biological. Works directly with livestock on a dairy farm. GS-7 Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-07 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-06 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is assisting in one or more phases of a research project; collecting, preparing, or verifying biological samples; statistically analyzing or summarizing data; and maintaining, calibrating or modifying specialized equipment. Summary This position is located within the Facilities Engineering Unit of the National Animal Disease Center (NADC) for USDA\'s Agricultural Research Service (ARS), in Ames, IA. In this position, you will assist higher-graded employees in a wide range of crafts and trades to operate, maintain, and repair a variety of mechanical and building systems in laboratories, animal housing, and support buildings. Responsibilities Assists in a wide range of crafts and trades as assigned for NCAH’s Common Services Division in research laboratories, animal housing, biocontainment facilities and support buildings. Assists with repair of drains and plumbing systems. Assists with concrete, painting, and carpentry work. Uses pertinent repair and maintenance manuals. Works under supervision adhering to detailed oral or written work assignments and instructions. Operates and maintains specialized equipment and tools. Assists with maintenance and repair of vacuum, oil, and water pumps; bearings, belts, temperature control valves; steam traps; and electrical systems. Subject to infection, injury, and continuous exposure to hazards of cuts, bruises, noise, vibrations, burns, dust, dirt, and danger from flying chips when using powered and hand tools. Subject to falls when working on ladders and scaffolds. Usually works in side of heated buildings but may be required to work on equipment and roofs outside in inclement weather. Must wear a full face respirator when working in biological control areas; restrictions of facial hair may be imposed for proper use of personal protective equipment. Other Considerations: May be called in nights and weekends to make or assist in emergency repairs or operations. Incumbent must possess valid state-issued driver\'s license to work independently, unescorted in unsecured areas primarily for delivering air filters, but also for cleaning air handling equipment, changing filters and other less-skilled HVAC related duties. This position requires the selectee to undergo a Special Agreements Check (SAC) and a Security Risk Assessment (SRA). Any offer made is considered a tentative job offer pending the outcome of the SAC. Retention in the position is contingent on a favorable SRA and full background investigation. Summary These positions are located in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), National Animal Disease Center, Animal Resources Unit in Ames, Iowa. In these positions, you will be responsible for serving as a working Lead, performing a full range of technical work in support of the care and maintenance, and health and behavior of animals (including birds and fish) involved in the scientific research projects. Responsibilities Set the pace of work, demonstrates proper work methods, and answer questions concerning procedures, policies, instructions, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and other directives. Perform a variety of processes, methods, procedures, and tasks related to the care and feeding of the animals. Ensure feed is stored appropriately per facility SOPs including identifying and clearly labeling spoiled or contaminated feed for disposal if expired Maintain required records such as feed consumed and refused, weight, birth date including condition at birth and parentage, mortality date, general conditions, etc. Collect, prepare, and verify samples from animals such as blood and other body fluids, tissues or secretions, and culture samples using techniques as prescribed by animal care and use protocols. Monitor the progress status of work and adjusts assignments in accordance with established priorities, obtaining input from supervisor when issues arise. Provide the team of technicians and animal caretakers information and instruction concerning the schedules and sequence of operations of assigned activities. Provide training and coaching to team and new team members in the activities and the established procedures and practices involved in the health and care of animals.
