This position is for one lecture section, equating to a 25% appointment.Course Description:SM 503 Legal Aspects of Sport3 credit hoursThis graduate-level course is a comprehensive review of legal aspects affecting sport, recreation, and fitness industries. The range of review includes civil procedure; contracts: employment, leases, waivers; tort liability for coaches, administrators, employees, and independent contractors; 14th Amendment Due Process and Equal Protection; product liability; and statutory regulation including Title VII, Title IX, ADA, Anti-Trust, and IRS code.ResponsibilitiesInstructional duties include but are not limited to:

Provide high quality instruction for one section of SM 503 Legal & Ethical Issues in Sport during the Winter 2025 term

Create / contribute to course syllabus and lesson plan

Produce relevant and reliable assessment tools and conduct routine assessments to evaluate student progress throughout the semester

Maintain student progress and attendance records and determine and enter final grades for the course

Meet with students for office hours and attend program and school meetings, as needed

Required QualificationsThe successful candidate must have:

Earned a Juris Doctor degree and have a minimum of two to three years' experience practicing law.

A depth of knowledge of sport law, including amateur, intercollegiate and professional sports (e.g., Title IX and current NIL legislation; gambling laws from a state and nationwide perspective; professional athlete representation; employment law; intellectual property rights).

Prior knowledge and experience in business ethics and decision-making in the realm of sport management, including around issues of athlete health and safety, sexual harassment and violence, and academic integrity in intercollegiate athletics, youth sport and physical education, sport-related product safety, and social responsibility in sport organizations

Excellent communication skills along with an ability and proven track record of successfully interacting with a diverse student body

Proven success with contributing to a positive workplace culture, and ability to consistently demonstrate our school'sCore Values (https://www.kines.umich.edu/about/mission-values-leadership) .

Desired Qualifications

College-level teaching experience, which could include being a teaching assistant, instructor of a recitation course, or having primary responsibility for teaching a college-level course
