Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.The Hazardous Material Shipper is a Packaging Specialist position in the Packaging and Transportation group (LOG-PT) of the Logistics Division. As a team member of the Hazardous Materials Shipping Team, you will support Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) programs with hazardous material shipping needs and will serve as an alternate POC for hazardous material shipping/receiving operations, MBA activities and vault custodian operations.Packaging Specialist 1 ($63,200 - $99,000)The selected candidate will: prepare hazardous material shipments ensuring they are compliant with Department of Energy Orders, Department of Transportation regulations, and/or International Civil Aviation Organization regulations; segregate shipments of hazardous materials in accordance with DOT, FMCSR and DOE orders; operate a forklift; have the ability to obtain all the requirements to become an authorized shipper; have the ability to follow policies and procedures without compromising safety and security. This individual will also need to be familiar with handling classified material.Packaging Specialist 2 ($69,500 - $110,300)In addition to what was outlined above, at this level, you will be able identify potential risks and mitigate strategies and corrective actions to shipping activities; providing advice and consultation to programs to ensure hazardous materials are compliant and safe to ship; mentor junior hazardous materials shipping employees and assist with their training to become authorized shippers; assist with developing procedures; participate as a key member of assessment teams. This will include overseeing of day-to-day activities, ensuring compliance with all policies, procedures, and regulations. Safety and Security are a primary responsibility for all Laboratory employees.What You NeedMinimum Job Requirements:
Previous or current authorization to ship hazardous materials on behalf of LANL, or equivalent training and experience in the private sector
Current or easily obtainable, Department of Transportation Hazardous Material Shipping Training and/or International Air Transport Association regulations training
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Knowledge of D.O.E. orders that govern transportation
Experience with logistical requirements of arranging a shipment
Working knowledge of computer systems
Ability to obtain hazardous authorized shipper certification

Knowledge of regulatory and Laboratory requirements related to hazardous and non-hazardous shipping including 49 CFR, IATA, and DOT
Working knowledge of authorization requirements for various hazardous material packaging
Demonstrated experience in developing and nurturing effective customer relationships with every level of personnel, including management and Federal oversight
Experience with developing shipping policy in collaboration with other shipping organizations to ensure compliant hazardous materials shipping, packaging, and handling
Thorough knowledge of integrated safety and security programs
Advanced math skills
