The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Orange County Livestock/4-H Livestock, Equine & Dairy Educator develops, designs, implements and evaluates educational and applied research programs for livestock producers and 4-H Youth including, but not exclusive to: beef, sheep, swine, equine, dairy and poultry; develops, designs, implements and evaluates educational and applied research programs in the areas of forage production and pasture and manure management. Conducts extension education programs utilizing a variety of informal education methodologies. Makes connections between Cornell and other land grant/research institutions and livestock producers in the Hudson Valley region. This position will require the use of multiple delivery methods, and the individual employed must have the ability to manage multiple projects.Required Qualifications:

Master’s degree appropriate to the responsibilities of the position such as Animal Science, or Agricultural Systems Management.

Coursework in Animal Science, Soil Science, Meat Science, Agronomy, or similar courses.

Experience relevant to the role of the position.

Ability to develop, initiate, implement, teach, and evaluate informal adult and youth educational programs to address diverse audiences.

Ability to identify and utilize program resources within the community.

Ability to communicate effectively through oral, written, and visual channels using traditional tools as well as innovative applications of electronic technology (e.g., computers, audio, video, etc.).

Computer skills: proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, database, and internet software.

Ability to lead and to delegate.

Ability to manage long-term goals within a context of day-to-day deadlines.

Ability to organize work and set priorities; to handle multiple tasks; and to work under pressure.

Ability to work with and support volunteer leadership and advisory committees.

Ability to participate in professional team efforts.

Ability to relate effectively to co-workers, advisors, community, and professional leaders, and identified clientele.

Ability to define, conduct and interpret applied research and demonstration projects.

Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.

Ability to work flexible hours which may include evenings and/or weekends, as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications:

Two years of progressively responsible experience in Animal Science related field.

4-H Program experience.

Volunteer/4-H Volunteer management experience.

Professional Volunteer Management training/certification

Coursework in research methodology, education, and management experience highly preferred.

Experience with meat processing or marketing.

Demonstrated experience and success with grant writing.

Demonstrated ability to manage resources and work within budgets.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

Program Responsibilities:Program Assessment - 20%

Identify local program needs for adult, commercial and 4-H Livestock Dairy & Equine in collaboration with CCE partners, advisory groups, community agencies and program participants.

Work directly with the community to identify and promote community-based needs for informal education.

Work with appropriate team members to identify broad agricultural industry/general public trends and concerns in a timely, efficient manner, including water quality, animal welfare, food safety and food security.

Make recommendations for program offerings, enhancements, or improvements.

May assist in multi-association team efforts to identify regional program needs for Livestock, 4-H Livestock, in collaboration with regional CCE partners, advisory groups, community agencies and program participants.

Program Development - 20%

Apply subject matter knowledge to develop new and innovative educational strategies in Livestock/4-H Livestock, that utilize proven educational methodologies and that consider the diversity of the community and enhance linkages to Cornell and other research institutions.

Develop programs in coordination with Ag & 4-H Program Leaders, Association Executive Director, and other associations utilizing the plan-of-work and program evaluations. Confer and partner with Cornell faculty and administrators to ensure program content is consistent with policies and objectives of the association.

Monitor and ensure program development and related activities to be consistent with the mission and plan-of-work.

As emerging needs are identified in areas related to this position, develop educational programs to address.

Program Delivery - 20%

Provide educational programming to targeted audiences in the area of Dairy and Equine Livestock production and marketing, 4-H Youth Livestock and Animal Sciences.

Develop cadre of volunteers who are capable of program instruction and management.

Provide Animal Science programming for youth (i.e., bowls, livestock skill-a-thon auction, etc.).

Utilize a variety of formal and informal educational strategies for delivery of the extension education program including the use of electronic media and targeted newsletters.

Participate in mass media efforts related to program delivery.

Serve as a subject-matter expert to staff, clientele and other audiences including schools, agencies, and community groups.

Utilizing subject matter knowledge, provide expertise and guidance in assistance with general agricultural issues.

Program Evaluation - 10%

Apply subject matter knowledge to design, implement and evaluate educational programs.

Work directly with the community to identify and promote community-based needs for informal education and measure impacts of these educational programs

Based on program evaluation data, formulate specific strategies to improve overall program qualities.

Work to ensure program evaluation and documentation is complete and communicate findings.

Applied Research - 5%

In collaboration with Cornell faculty and other partners assist with meaningful applied research which addresses the needs of producers in the region.

Ensure applied research is within statewide Plan of Work.

Collect and process diagnostic laboratory samples.

Administrative Responsibilities:Direction - 5%

May assist in developing and enhancing relationships with county, state and federal agencies, organizations, industries, and community leaders.

Provides leadership to plan and set goals to ensure Association’s overall livestock program success.

Plan programs to consider the diversity of the community and meet Equal Program Opportunity guidelines.

May provide input to the planning of program budget based on program feasibility needs.

Assist with program development.

Management - 10%

In collaboration with the Program Leader, manage short- and long-range program development, needs assessments, program implementation, program evaluation and impact reports.

Provide support/guidance for 4-H Volunteer management in 4-H Livestock and Youth Animal Sciences.

May assist in solving problems and resolving conflict with program utilizing appropriate policies and procedures.

Monitor program to ensure that educational content conforms to research base, policies and objectives of the Association and is research knowledge based.

Monitor program resources and needs to meet budget constraints. Effectively allocate resources to accomplish program objectives.

Coordination/Operation - 5%

Provides leadership for the coordination of quality Livestock, 4-H Livestock/Animal Sciences educational programs.

Compile program resources/materials, implement program delivery schedule and collect evaluation data from participants.

Participate in Orange County 4-H recruitment events to increase enrollment in 4-H Livestock and youth Animal Science programs.

Provide program outcomes and impacts results to Ag & 4-H Program Leaders to market program to decision-makers and the public.

Assist supervisor in administrative tasks as assigned.

Assist in fund development for the program including the preparation and submission of proposals intended to generate program generated revenue.

Compile budget data and written reports on finance and plan-of-work.

Professional Improvement - 5%

In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes and Association priorities.

Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.

Health and SafetyApplied to all duties and functions.

Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.

Be familiar with and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.

Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.
