POSITION OVERVIEWApplications Accepted From: All Persons InterestedPN: 34444Division/Section: Human Services/Office of Chronic Disease, Health Education and WellnessWorkdays & Hours: Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM Subject to ChangeDESCRIPTION OF DUTIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The Houston Health Department seeks dynamic candidates that will fill the role of the Senior Health Education Coordinator for Public Health Education Unit Programs. The Senior Health Education Coordinator is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating community-based and clinic patient health education and health promotion initiatives. Essential duties include:

Supervise health education programming implementation in assigned area. Schedule and review work, train and evaluate employees.

Develop, administer, and supervise the implementation of patient and community health education services and programs; evaluates community and Health Department response and impact; compiles statistical data; recommends improvements.

Apply appropriate health behavior theories and evidence-based models to plan, organize, implement, and evaluate health education and health promotion programming in clinic and community-based settings.

Develop and interpret culturally and linguistically appropriate content for health education materials, visual aids, presentations, interactive demonstrations for one-on-one, group classes and social media settings. Content includes but is not limited to hypertension prevention and management, weight management, tobacco use prevention and cessation, stress management and life modification, and national health observances.

Conduct health promotion programming including providing specialized health information, knowledge and skills to various target populations and the general public through community-based, clinic-based and web-based platforms.

Establish and maintain close working relationships with internal staff, community-based and private sector organizations to coordinate and perform health education and health promotion activities.

Coordinates departmental activities and projects with educators, inter-agency divisions, and other entities.

Designs evaluation tools and appropriate research methodology for data collection, analysis and compilation.

Evaluation tasks including but are not limited to applying and adapting appropriate data collection instruments, collecting and managing data, preparing reports and participating in quality assurance and quality improvement activities.

Provides assessment reports on health care education, staff development and community education services.

Utilize various inter-disciplinary, communication and marketing techniques to promote and disseminate actionable health and wellness information and advocate for health equity.

Maintain health education supplies, inventory, and assets.

Serves as a subject matter expert and consultant on the topic of Chronic Diseases, prevention and self-management.

WORKING CONDITIONSThe position occasionally requires stooping or bending. Occasional very light lifting, such as three or four reams of papers or books (up to 20 pounds or an equivalent weight) may be required. There are no major sources of discomfort, i.e., essentially normal office environment with acceptable lighting, temperature and air conditions. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSEDUCATION REQUIREMENTSRequires a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing, Health Education, Biology, Medical Technology or related field.EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTSFour (4) years of experience in Public Health Nursing, Health Education, Biology, Medical Technology or a related field such as Medical Social Work are required.A Master's degree in Health Education, Medical Technology, Public Health Nursing or Biology and two (2) years of related work experience may be substituted for the above requirements.LICENSE REQUIREMENTSNONEPREFERENCESPreference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.

3-5 years of experience working in the sub-areas of nutrition, physical activity, diabetes, heart disease, tobacco cessation, and/or stress management

Directly related professional experience in Health Education, Social Work, Nutrition, Exercise Science, Fitness, and Recreation preferred

Master’s degree in Public (MPH)

Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES®)

Experience planning and implementing health programs and producing planning technical documents such as action plans, logic models, workflows, and/or program proposals.

Experience with recruiting participants into health programs.

Experience using Microsoft Office products including Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, and PowerPoint or Adobe Suite in generating flyers, materials, correspondence, reports, presentations
