For a complete description of our benefits for this position, please view this page .The HMC 3EH Medicine/Telemetry Unit has an outstanding opportunity for a Patient Services Specialist PSS (Part-time, Day Shifts) . The Patient Service Specialist (PSS) performs specific leadership functions related to coordination of clerical and support activities for patient care as delegated by and in collaboration with the Nurse Manager. The PSS serves as a role model and provides guidance to other Patient Service Specialist staff, including participation in hiring, orientation and evaluation of performance.The PSS coordinates the clerical and support activities for patient care on a nursing unit, receives visitors to the unit and facilitates contact between the patient/family and appropriate discipline. The PSS also participates in unit and selected departmental activities to promote effective problem solving and communication.Standards of Performance

Maintain current census information.

Assemble and maintain medical record in a usable format.

Obtain and return medical records to/from Patient Data Services.

Routinely check screen saver for new physician orders.

Flag/call attention to unsigned verbal orders per policy.

Assist with labs/labels.

Prioritize duties to maintain patient safety, smooth unit operations, and customer satisfaction.

Order and use forms and supplies in a cost-effective manner.

Demonstrate proficiency in use of communication devices on the unit.

Communicate in a confident friendly manner that conveys a positive image.

Identify self and unit when answering the phone.

Consistently interact courteously.

Demonstrate respect for patient’s values, lifestyle, spiritual needs and/or cultural diversity in all interactions.

Maintain confidentiality of written and verbal patient information according to policy.

Maintain systems and supplies that promote unit efficiency.

Understand and utilize medical terminology and knowledge of reference resources.

Identify own learning needs and seek directions for growth.

Maintain a well-organized and clutter-free desk area.Unit Coordination

Coordinate admissions, discharges and transfers with the charge nurse and patient placement.

Communicate STAT orders and emergent/urgent test result to staff immediately.

Communicate other departments’ messages immediately.

Coordinate transportation including paperwork to and from other facilities.

Coordinate transportation including paperwork for diagnostic tests.

Facilitate prompt and smooth discharge of the patient by coordinating discharge medications, arranging follow-up appointments, assembling pertinent medical record information for the receiving facility, and communicating all of this to the assigned nurse and charge nurses.

Report previous shift activities and remaining tasks to oncoming Patient Service Specialist and/or charge nurse.

Review computer census information.

Facilitate contact between patient/family and appropriate staff.

Assist and direct patients, families and unfamiliar staff to appropriate medical center services.

Facilitate patients getting to exams and diagnostic tests.

Process requisitions and orders in a timely manner.

Direct staff to appropriate resources, forms, etc.Accountability

Follow integrity and compliance guidelines.

Demonstrate awareness of and function within safety, infection control, emergency and equipment guidelines.

Maintain a safe environment and identify and reports all unsafe situations including environmental hazards (electrical, chemical, other); use Body Substance Isolation and follow OSHA standards.

Know and follow correct procedures to initiate appropriate codes.

Know current location and use of emergency equipment, such as, but not limited to, fire alarms, fire extinguishers, 02 shut off valves, circuit breakers, emergency exits, elevator alarms.

Remain calm, accurately identify emergency situations, and offer assistance when emergency arises.

Participate in emergency scenarios (e.g. fire drills, mock codes, disaster drills).

Demonstrate flexibility in response to unexpected changes and emergencies on the unit.

Stay informed of and contribute to unit quality assessment and improvement projects.

Participate in own evaluation.

Respond positively when learning needs are identified and accept responsibility for seeking education.

Attend and participate in in-services and continuing education programs which directly affect practice and improve unit operations.

Attend and participate in unit meetings, committees and/or projects; read minutes if unable to attend.
