Performs technical tasks involved in the preparation, documentation and distribution of patient medications.Required Qualifications
California Pharmacy Technician License (TCH) - CA State Board of Pharmacy -REQUIRED
Preferred Qualifications
1 Year Experience in a hospital/infusion pharmacy/or retail pharmacy environment
Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) - Pharmacy Technician Certification Board -PREFERRED
Essential Functions
Accurately processes prescriptionsObtains all required patient information including allergies.Demonstrates understanding of and accurately applies metric and apothecary systems of weights and measures, pharmaceutical calculations, trade and generic names, dosages and indications.Completes all computer data fields when entering prescriptions.Communicates problems and delays in processing to pharmacist as appropriate.Notifies the pharmacist of any duplicate drug entries, too frequent refills, drug interactions, or allergy warning statements highlighted during prescription entry.Prepares the prescription label with accurate information about the product dispensed (brand/generic) as required by law and affixes any useful auxiliary labels to the vial .Provides for accurate and secure filling of controlled substance prescriptions. Maintains all documentation accurately according to policies and procedures. Maintains adequate control drug inventory and resolves pharmacy narcotic discrepancies in a timely manner.Obtains pharmacist check prior to dispensing 100% of the time.Assures that all tasks are accomplished during shift.
Inventory controlCommunicates special or urgent needs to pharmacist.Assist with wholesaler order delivery. Restocks new inventory daily.Pre-pack commonly used medications (fast-movers).Removes outdated and unusable medications from inventory for disposal or credit from wholesaler or reverse distribution vendor.Maintains adequate levels of supplies including prescription vials, liquid bottles, pharmacy labels, printer paper, bags, mailing supplies, Fed Ex supplies and pharmacy caution labels.Send daily order to wholesaler online.Update medication pricing in computer system via wholesaler invoices.Maintains neat and organized work areas.Maintains integrity of Pharmacy Waste streams.
Medication managementPackages pharmacist checked medications for delivery.Checks with Driver Coordinator to facilitate medication deliveries with Sharp couriers or outside courier service.Packages and coordinates USPS mailing by 2:15, Fed Ex pickups and deliveries by 4pm and Dynamex deliveries as needed.
Medication safetyDemonstrates knowledge of and active participation in concurrent medication safety event monitoring programs.Qualitative work demonstrates thoughtful and thorough identification, evaluation and analysis of medication safety events.Quantitative work reflects the desire to contribute to the ADE monitoring aspect of Safe Medication Practice.
Regulatory complianceMaintain Pyxis inventory by reviewing reports, ordering C II-V from wholesaler and coordinating with Hospice pharmacist to generate a DEA 222 order form. Inventory Par levels are maintained within established levels.Pyxis is restocked accurately with correct medications when delivered by wholesaler.Review & file "All CII Safe Events" on a daily basis. Assures all documentation and records are complete and filed in appropriate binder.Review Pyxis for open discrepancies and resolve all Pyxis discrepancies in a timely manner.Perform manual Pyxis inventory weekly with another technician.Prepackaging: Prepares and performs prepackaging of medications, labels and documents the pre-packing / re-packaging of unit dose, bulk and compounded medications according to policy, procedure and regulatory standards.Check for outdates in Pyxis weekly.
