We are seeking an aide to work with our 17 year old son who is recovering from a severe traumatic brain injury and will be returning to his high school on a very part-time basis at the end of August.
Our son is an extremely bright, philosophical, empathetic and articulate young man who is making a remarkable recovery after being hit by a car while riding his bike. We are seeking a caring, creative, talented aide to accompany him at school both to provide occupational therapy and educational support while at school.
The candidate chosen will get to have direct training and guidance from his experienced Occupational Therapist for his current needs and how to best support him. This is a great opportunity for a future OT who is looking for more experience working with neurological injuries.
Exact hours are TBD as we are working out the schedule with his school, but we anticipate approximately 12-15 hours/week.
The ideal candidate will have the following skills/experience:
Direct experience working with people recovering from brain injury (occupational therapy, educational therapy, speech or PT, psychology are all good backgrounds).
Ability to guide him safely between classes and around the school campus. Right now he walks with a walker and is beginning to walk independently with close hands on supervision.
Interest and ability to engage with him on school topics, likely in the humanities
Successful experience understanding the inclusion needs of disabled clients in "general" group settings (can be professional or informal/personal)
Interest in and creativity with assistive technologies, like note taking, speech to text etc.
Sensitivity to if he gets overwhelmed by stimulation and may need to a quiet break
Must provide references and pass a background check before starting work
Must have a safe vehicle and clean driving record
The ideal candidate will also have these interests and personality traits:
An interest and appreciation for wordplay, poetry and creative writing
A great sense of humor
An interest in and love of music
