The unit is responsible for completing all departmental financial transactions in an accurate and timely manner, including but not limited to accounts receivable, accounts payable, encumbrances, and budget. The unit is responsible for financial reporting to management and assisting departmental units with interpreting financial information and decision-making. This unit works closely with DOL Budget to plan, direct, and control fiscal operations, maintain fiscal oversight, and monitor compliance with various authoritative guidance (include Colorado Revised Statutes, Fiscal Rules, federal reporting guidelines, GASB, GAAS, and other regulatory rules). Specific areas of responsibility include processing accounts payable and receivable, legal services billing, litigation expense tracking and reporting, payroll and benefits administration, grant accounting and reporting, monitoring budget to actual, preparing financial exhibits, interpreting and implementing new accounting standards, providing support for annual audits, working under a delegation from the Office of the State Controller for all financial operations, and other management reporting (internal and external).The Financial Services team has two Staff Account (Accountant I) position openings.Position #00179 is the primary accountant for billing and program revenue for the Department of Law. The position is a first-level accountant and by using generally accepted accounting principles, this position is responsible for recognizing revenue from the Department’s various revenue sources. This includes entering and reviewing accounting entries and proper revenue recognition for legal services billing to all State agencies, CORA, POST fees, Consumer Protection court awards, etc. This position serves as the main point of contact for the Department’s private collection agency, recording amounts collected in accordance with accounting standards regarding revenue recognition as well as State fiscal policies regarding collections, and reconciling outstanding amounts owed. This position also serves as one accountant responsible for accounts payable transactions and adjusting entries. This position creates job aids related to their accounting tasks, manages workflow of accounting document submissions, and ensures compliance with applicable State and departmental rules and policies as they relate to the assigned accounting tasks.Position #00521 is the primary accountant for accounts payable for the Department of Law. The position is a first-level accountant and by using generally accepted accounting principles, this position is responsible for managing financial transactions with suppliers, vendors and others. The position is responsible for issuing disbursements and payments to satisfy DOL’s financial obligations, records such transactions to ensure proper accounting records, and ensures reports, records, and transactions are in compliance with professional accounting standards, State fiscal policies and rules, the Colorado financial systems. This position creates job aids related to their accounting tasks, manages workflow of accounting document submissions, and ensures compliance with applicable State and departmental rules and policies as they relate to the assigned accounting tasks.Salary note: Although a salary range is listed, salary will be set commensurate with the successful candidate's qualifications and in compliance with the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act.This recruitment may be used to fill multiple Accountant positions in the Department of Law. Four (4) years of professional accounting or governmental auditing experience.
OR
A combination of related education (coursework requires 27 semester hours completed in accounting or auditing) and/or professional accounting or governmental auditing experience equal to four (4) years
Current, valid licensure as a CPA by the Colorado Board of Accountancy will substitute for four (4) years of education
Note: Candidates qualifying with education must provide a copy of their transcripts. Candidates possessing a foreign degree must submit a translation (evaluation) of their degree from an accredited institution, such as The National Association of Credential Evaluations Services in order to be given credit for the degree.

Professional accounting experience beyond the required two years;
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel;
Experience working with CORE (Colorado Operations Resource Engine);

State government accounting experience.
