Summary This position is located in Rock Creek Park, in the Division of Maintenance. The incumbent of the position is in the internship program. This is developmental opportunity in the Excepted Service. Interns may be eligible for non-competitive conversion to permanent employment. Responsibilities The major duties of the STUDENT TRAINEE (Maintenance Worker) position include, but are not limited to, the following: Performs minor and/or rough carpentry repairs using simple measures and hand tools. Performs minor painting tasks using brushes and/or rollers. Performs minor plumbing repairs. Assists higher graded Maintenance Workers or tradesmen in the performance of their work. Performs simple and routine maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, equipment, and related utilities. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males. Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. Pathways participant agreement is required. You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver\'s license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver\'s license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver\'s licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work. Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program. Special working conditions: Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Physical Demands: Works from ladders, scaffolds and platforms and where surfaces to be coated, or the parts of systems worked on are hard to reach that require incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds. Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment, paints, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks, and biting insects. The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are NOT suitable for telework.

Physical Demands: Incumbent is frequently required to perform heavy lifting up to 50 pounds, unassisted. Makes repairs from ladders, scaffolding and platforms, operates motorized equipment and uses hand and power tools. Incumbent is required to set up and break down scaffolding and platforms. Is continuously required to stand, stoop, bend, and kneel while working. Working Conditions: Most work is performed outside with exposure to all types of harsh weather conditions. Assignments involve exposure to dust and dirt while mixing mortar, screening soil, backfilling, and driving to and from outlying areas. Incumbent may be subject to cuts, bruises, insect bites, danger of falling when on ladder or scaffolding, and broken bones as a result of accidents while driving or when loading and unloading equipment and materials. Incumbent will be provided and will be expected to wear prescribed personal protective equipment. Some contact is necessary with chemical agents in the nature of cleaning fluids and preservation compounds, some of which are considered hazardous. Work with chemical agents will be conducted within approved manufacturer\'s specifications and in accordance with the unit\'s precautions. The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are NOT suitable for telework.
