Mechanical Operator & Special Projects

The Mechanical Operator is entrusted with the operation, monitoring, and maintenance of mechanical equipment and machinery on or within Nuhou and Waioli property and assets, facilities, warehouses, or other industrial environments. This position reports directly to the Executive Director and is pivotal in ensuring that all machinery functions efficiently, safely, and in accordance with established regulated guidelines supporting all of the organization’s objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

Operate WWTP and other mechanical equipment, including but not limited to conveyors, pumps, compressors, and production machinery, strictly in accordance with standard operating procedures.

Monitor the performance of equipment, promptly identify any issues, and report malfunctions or irregularities to the Project Manager and Executive Director.

Conduct routine inspections and execute preventive maintenance tasks to ensure equipment reliability and safety.

Stay up to date regarding continuous education in the mechanical operation of the WWTP and other equipment.

Adjust machine controls and settings as necessary to optimize performance and achieve production targets.

Ensure irrigation lines (both from the WWTP and other water sources) are installed and are in locations that are most beneficial to the organization as well as where required as regulated.

Accurately document and maintain operating data, maintenance activities, and production output (Records) as required by regulated and organizational protocols.

Adhere to all safety procedures, utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and maintain a clean and orderly work area at all times.

Collaborate effectively with the Executive Director, Project Manager, consultants, supervisors, technicians, and fellow team members to resolve operational challenges and contribute to process improvement initiatives.

Research and procure items necessary for the safe handling and operating of all mechanical equipment, finding the highest quality parts at the best pricing available.

Expedite invoices for payment by understanding the accounting system and coding purchased items accurately.

Accurately budget for the proper maintenance of the WWTP and the ancillary items adjoined to it (irrigation lines, generator, etc.). Communicate such information to the Executive Director.

Handle special projects as directed by the Executive Director. Special projects may include but are not limited to the following; stream cleaning, bush clearing, tree trimming and removal and other miscellaneous tasks.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent credential; vocational or technical training in mechanical systems is considered advantageous.

Demonstrated understanding of mechanical systems, tools, and equipment.

Ability to comprehend, communicate and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and safety documentation as regulated.

Proficient hand-eye coordination and physical dexterity, essential for the operation of machinery and handling of materials.

Exceptional attention to detail and unwavering commitment to safety protocols.

Capacity to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.

Strong communication skills focusing on identifying and reporting issues and coordinating resolution plans.

Willingness to work variable shifts, including nights, weekends, and overtime as necessary.

Working Conditions:

Mechanical Operators are employed in industrial or outdoors settings where exposure to noise, elevated temperatures, moving machinery, and potentially hazardous materials may occur. The position frequently necessitates prolonged periods of standing, the handling of heavy objects, and the consistent use of appropriate personal protective equipment. Strict adherence to all safety guidelines is imperative.
