  • Summary This position is located in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve. This is a career or career-conditional position in the competitive service. Government housing is NOT available for this position. Responsibilities As Supervisory Park Ranger you will lead daily operations and direct the completion of collateral duties related to operations, training, and leadership. You will supervise GL-9 permanent and seasonal law enforcement rangers and park volunteers. You will conduct and supervise the detection of criminal activity, investigation of criminal violations, and custodial arrests. You may prepare and execute warrants, interview witnesses, and detail suspects. You will ensure the completion of written reports. You will conduct and/or supervise gathering of law enforcement, security, and intelligence information relating to the park, its facilities, events, mission, or visitors. You will set work goals and ensure all employees receive required training in a timely manner; identify operational requirements and make recommendations to your supervisor regarding programming, budgeting, training, administration, and evaluation of operations; and schedule patrols to maximizes visitor contact with special consideration to problem areas. You will manage and/or respond to complex law enforcement, structure fire, medical/trauma, search and rescue wildland fire, vessel, vehicle, ORV, aviation incidents and accidents, or natural disasters. In addition, you will conduct all aspects of employee supervision including performance planning and appraisals, employee counseling and recognition. Physical Demands: The work requires at least average physical agility, strength, and dexterity. The incumbent must be able to meet park and NPS physical fitness requirements and medical standards for law enforcement and emergency services personnel. The work may require physical exertion such as regular and recurring long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, rocky surfaces; mountainous terrain; bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching or similar activity; kayak paddling; ability to maintain stability and movement on motorboats that are pitching and rolling over waves; carrying of equipment weighing 50 pounds or more; recurring lifting of moderately heavy items such as SCBA packs, fire packs and rescue gear. The work may require specific, but common, physical characteristics and abilities of average agility and dexterity. Duties involve performing physically rigorous assignments, oftentimes in isolated outdoor environments, frequently while exposed to severe weather conditions. There is a physical, mental, and emotionally high stress component to the incumbent\'s work assignments. Dangerous persons must be physically confronted, subdued, and apprehended, many of whom are known to carry weapons. Prisoners must be kept under physical restraint during transport and processing. Criminal investigations often must be carried out without regard to fixed work schedules, days off, or opportunities for proper rest or nutrition. Working Conditions: Work includes both office and outdoor settings. Field work is performed in Southeast Alaska coastal conditions characterized by remote and rugged terrain, quickly changing weather, abundant rain and snowfall, low temperatures, high winds, variable seas and water levels, insects, and potentially dangerous wildlife. Field work of the incumbent regularly includes periods of standing, walking, or hiking, in many cases on uneven steep, rough, slippery, and/or rugged terrain. Strenuous exertion is frequently required in law enforcement, firefighting, search and rescue, and medical related emergency activities. Lifting or carrying equipment over 50 pounds such as firefighting or search and rescue equipment is required. In some situations, heavy packs may have to be carried long distances over uneven, unimproved surfaces, or snow-covered terrain. The duties involve performing physically rigorous work in an isolated outdoor environment while routinely exposed to discomforts including severe weather conditions, high and low temperatures, dust, noise, smoke, dampness, remote camps, and cramped quarters. Work may involve periodic exposure to high risks or discomforts such as low temperatures, high winds, adverse weather conditions, ocean water, falling limbs or trees, and similar situations. Incumbent may require special safety precautions, i.e., working around boats, aircraft, off road vehicles, moving parts, or machines; persons with contagious diseases or irritant chemicals, blood borne pathogens, dangerous animals, and substances, etc. Incumbent may be required to use protective clothing or gear such as masks, gowns, coats, boots, gloves, helmets, or shields. The work is performed at various hours of the day, and night and for prolonged periods during emergency situations. Shift work is often required. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Must possess a Type I Law Enforcement Commission. Selectee(s) will be required to carry a firearm while performing duties and maintain firearm proficiency. Selectee(s) must be free of any domestic violence convictions. Appointment will be subject to the applicant\'s successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination. Prior to appointment, the people selected for these positions must be determined physically fit by an authorized physician to perform strenuous and physically demanding duties, pass a medical examination, and complete the Physical Efficiency Battery (PEB). The PEB is a fitness test consisting of five different components: 1) agility run - measures the ability to get up from the ground and sprint while changing directions; 2) bench press - measures upper body strength for one repetition; 3) 1.5 mile run - measures cardio/respiratory fitness; 4) sit and reach - measures flexibility in the lower back, legs and shoulders; and 5) body composition - measures body fat. Prior to appointment, selectees will be tested in all five components if the PEB has not been completed within the last year. You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use. Current, valid driver\'s license required. Applicants must be at least 21 years old. Must obtain DOI-MOCC certification within the first year of employment. Must obtain Structure Firefighter I/II certification within two years of entrance on duty: Structural firefighting and other forms of field work demand a high level of fitness to safely perform arduous, day-long work in difficult environmental conditions, including steep terrain, extreme temperatures, altitude, and smoke, and to meet unforeseen emergencies. This position requires that you pass a PAT (Physical Ability Test) that is a rigorous physical fitness test for structure fire fighting. Applicants shall be disqualified for appointment if they fail to meet any physical requirement. In addition, you will be required to pass a respirator fit test. Must obtain NREMT-Emergency Medical Technician or higher EMS certification within two years of entrance on duty.
