  • Summary This position is located within Neurology Service, Edward Hines VA Medical Center, Hines IL. The incumbent mainly functions in a clinical role by providing neurological services to patients in the Neurology Clinic and the Inpatient Neurology Consult Service. Develop and maintain a faculty ambulatory Neurology practice, with a focus on self-management, education, and the care of patients with neurologic diseases throughout the continuum of care. Neurology Consult Service: Evaluates and advises the primary physicians on inpatients hospitalized at the Edward Hines VA for which consults from the Neurology Service are requested. This will include evaluation and care for patients in the Emergency Department, Medical Service, Surgical Service, and from other inpatient and outpatient services. Supervises and teaches trainees including medical students, residents and fellows. Provides on-call coverage twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, in accordance with the Attending call schedule. Administrative Duties: Serve on Edward Hines Jr., VA Hospital department and hospital committees as requested by the Chief of Staff. Complete all Medical Record documentation requirements as specified in the Medical Staff Rules and Regulations on a concurrent basis. Maintain an academic affiliation with Loyola Medical Center Department of Neurology. Partner with the Department of Neurology at Loyola as needed to maintain and develop the academic affiliate relationship. Develop the Department of Neurology to meet the care needs of the Veterans at Hines Physician must be cognizant of, and comply with, all VA policies and procedures, as well as pertinent state and federal regulations The position involves direct outpatient clinical care, teaching and supervising trainees. There is administrative work, but the physician will be required to attend staff meetings, team meetings, and complete peer review evaluations. Time within the scheduled workday will be provided to complete this work. Research Duties Apply for, and if obtained, maintain Veterans Affairs funding to continue patient-oriented research to improve the quality of care of patients with epilepsy and other neurologic conditions. Facilitate ongoing clinical research within the Department of Neurology Teaching Duties Supervise and instruct Neurology fellows, residents, and medical students, on Neurology Services from both Loyola and Hines Medical Center affiliates Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as \"Physician Resident Providers\" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a \"scope of practice\" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. As required by Executive Order 14043, Federal employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 regardless of the employee\'s duty location or work arrangement (e.g., telework, remote work, etc.), subject to such exceptions as required by law. If selected, you will be required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and submit documentation of proof of vaccination before your start date. Per the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), you are fully vaccinated for COVID-19, 2 weeks after receiving the requisite number of doses of a COVID-19 vaccine approved or authorized for emergency use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration or that has been listed for emergency use by the World Health Organization. For Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, or AstraZeneca/Oxford, full vaccination is 2 weeks after receiving the second dose in a 2-dose series. For Johnson and Johnson (J&J)/Janssen, full vaccination is 2 weeks after an employee has received a single dose. HR Office staff must verify your vaccination status prior to issuing a final offer of employment and before you report for New Employee Orientation. [In addition, new hires must show vaccination documentation and submit their completed VA FORM 10230, COVID-19 Vaccination Form, to VA HR staff when reporting for New Employee Orientation. HR staff will upload vaccination information in the VA Light Electronic Action Framework (LEAF) system. If you are unable to obtain the COVID-19 vaccination due to a legally covered exception (i.e., medical or religious reasons), VA will provide additional information regarding what information or documentation is needed and how you can request an exception. If you request a legally required exception, you must first complete the VA FORM 10230, COVID-19 Vaccination Form, and return the form to the servicing HR Office staff within 2 business days. The HR Office staff will submit the form to your new supervisor of record for adjudication of the exception request. You may receive a final offer or be appointed while your request for medical or religious exception is being adjudicated. Preferred Experience: Experience in supervision and academic affiliations is preferred. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: Walking, bending, stooping, and some lifting in the direct care of patients. There may also be extended periods of sitting. Education Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. [If the applicant does not claim an ECFMG certificate, facility officials must still confirm that the medical school meets (or met) ECFMG eligibility requirements for the year the candidate graduated.] NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. § 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities.
