The Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks applicants for the position of Forest & Park Supervisor II for Pilgrim Memorial State Park, 79 Water St., Plymouth, MA. DUTIES: -Supervises the maintenance of assigned recreational areas, including such activities as grounds maintenance, building and equipment main­tenance, and repair and removal of hazardous trees or limbs. -Inspects the condition of state-operated forest and park recreational areas and facilities to determine their suitability for public use, ensures compliance with safety standards and determines maintenance needs. -Patrols recreational areas and facilities to maintain security and ensures compliance with applicable rules, regulations and policies. -Issues permits or gives permission for the use of recreational facilities, park areas, etc. and collects related fees. -Maintains records and prepares reports concerning assigned work to provide information and make appropriate recommendations. -Organizes and implements recreational and cultural programs, including sports competitions, nature walks, shows, etc. for the enjoyment of visitors to the parks. -Coordinates the activities and work of volunteers, court-referred individuals, etc. -Determines supply needs; operates and performs routine maintenance on various types of equipment and vehicles; provides information to the general public; interviews candidates for employment; provides on-the-job training; and uses small hand tools. -Monitor the activities of recreational area personnel to ensure the maintenance of state forest and park areas for recreational purposes. -Confer with agency personnel concerning assigned unit activities to resolve problems, provide information and make recommendations. -Review reports and make recommendations concerning actions to be taken to resolve problems and/or to recommend changes in policies, procedures, etc. -Performs related duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT HIRE: -Ability to supervise, including planning and assigning work according to the nature of the job to be accomplished, assessing the capabilities of subordinates and available resources; controlling work through periodic reviews and/or evaluations; determining subor­dinates’ training needs and providing or arranging for such training; motivating subordinates to work effectively; determining the need for disciplinary action and recommending disciplinary action. -Knowledge of the methods and techniques of forest and park manage­ment, including terminology. -Knowledge of safety practices and procedures followed in forest and park management. -Knowledge of the types and uses of materials and equipment used in forest and park maintenance. -Knowledge of the methods and techniques used in the care and main­tenance of trees and shrubs. -Skill in using hand-held power tools. -Skill in using chainsaw and has all the proper certificates required by the agency. -Skill in using hand tools such as hammers, pliers, etc. -Ability to understand, apply and explain the laws, rules, regula­tions, policies, procedures, specifications, standards and guideli­nes governing assigned unit activities. -Ability to maintain accurate records. -Ability to prepare general reports. -Ability to write clearly and concisely. -Ability to give oral instructions in a precise, understandable manner. -Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others. -Ability to establish rapport with persons from different ethnic, cultural and/or economic backgrounds. -Ability to maintain a calm manner in emergency situations. -Ability to interact with people who are under physical and/or emotional stress. -Physical stamina and endurance. Based on assignment, the following additional qualification may be required at hire: -Ability to operate a motor vehicle. -Ability to communicate effectively in oral expression and written via email or letter. -Ability to coordinate the efforts of others in accomplishing assigned work objectives.
