Summary This position is located in Everglades National Park, in the Office of the Superintendent. Open to the first 100 applicants or until 11/15/2024 whichever comes first. Responsibilities Directs an intricate program of archeological and other cultural resources activities that involve sensitive and complex issues that may impact a wide variety of park issues. Serves as an advisor to park management on cultural resources. Identifies, evaluates, and monitors cultural resources; identifies potential threats; and makes recommendations to management regarding status and mitigation of impacts (present and future). Represents the superintendent when working with others on archeological matters. Develops and maintains liaisons and effective working relations with related groups and individuals, agencies, and the public. Attends management and professional conferences and other events for Responsible for, or makes significant contributions to, the resources management plan, interpretive prospectus, and spin-off documents such as specific plans, action plans, revisions, and fiscal and budget documents Carries out program management duties by developing work plans and schedules, scopes of work, cost estimates, and proposals and/or grants to justify funding requests and accomplish goals. May administer and track project funds and prepare accomplishment reports, as needed. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver\'s license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver\'s license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver\'s licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Qualifications REQUIREMENTS CONTINUTED You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 8 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes. You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority. All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-11/15/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. BASIC EDUCATION for the Archeologist, GS-0193: A: Have completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor\'s or higher degree that included 3 semester hours each in the following course areas: History of archeology; Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa; Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development; Theory and methods of archeology (methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques); Archeological field school, provided a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work; AND six semester hours of related course work in geography, geology, or cultural geography; history, historiography, or historical archeology; environmental studies; scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or surveying; AND Archeological field school. -OR- B: Have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in related curriculum obtained at an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor\'s or higher degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics); history; American studies, or a related discipline, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements stated above (including archeological field school). -OR- C: Have a combination of education and experience that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in A above, plus appropriate additional education or technical experience to total 4 years. This combination must have demonstrated that you possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work of an archeologist comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study. -OR- D. Have four year of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher-level archeologist be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project. Candidates who do not meet this requirement by close of this announcement will receive no further consideration for this position. - AND - To qualify for this position at the GS-12 grade level, you must possess the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: Have at least one (1) year of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service (obtained either in the private or public sectors)) specialized experience includes at least one full year of archeology or cultural resource management that has equipped me with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. My experience is equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to that of at least the GS-11 level in the Federal government. Examples of specialized experience for the GS-11 Archeologist focuses on archeological project work rather than programmatic responsibilities. This includes designing research, planning, directing, and completing inventories (often called surveys) and excavation projects; authoring technical reports; using GIS to prepare for field work document archeological resources, and to create geospatial data sets and maps after field work. Specialized experience also includes evaluating National Register of Historic Places eligibility for these resources, assessing effects of federal undertakings to them and mitigating adverse effects through archeological studies. Experience also includes determining site condition and preparing damage assessments for archeological sites are found to have been looted. A GS-11 assists with state and tribal consultation and will evaluate and review external reports to ensure standards are met. Experience also includes proficient use of service-wide databases Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Education To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work. Additional Information Physical Demands: The position may require strenuous physical activity including periods of standing, walking, climbing, and lifting and carrying heavy objects. Working Conditions: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Assignments may be performed in potentially hazardous areas including steep slopes, rocky terrain, volcanoes, caves, fire lines, arctic environments, swamps, deserts, and forests. Flying in fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters is possible. The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval. Documentation for the Land Management Workforce Flexibility Act (LMWFA) eligibility, You must submit ALL SF-50s and performance information for each period of temporary/term employment that qualifies for LMWFA. Performance documentation can be obtained by contacting the supervisors for the positions you served in during your 24 months. If they did not complete performance appraisals ask them to provide a statement of performance for each period of service.
