  • Summary The primary purpose of the position is to perform recurring building and/or utility maintenance and operation duties and to assist journeymen and other higher graded maintenance workers. Incumbent utilizes knowledge and skills in several trades and crafts. The duties described by this position may not fully meet the type of work to be performed or there may be work that this position does not do in each of the specialties; however, if the general intent is met then this position is appropriate. Responsibilities MAJOR DUTIES: Buildings and Utilities - You may be assigned to assist journeyman carpenters, plumbers, and electrician with projects related to carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, heating, air conditioning, masonry, and routine maintenance of generators. May be required to drive pickup trucks and other vehicles up to 1 ton in a variety of traffic situations and road conditions. May operate various types of power equipment. General Maintenance: You may be assigned to clean public restrooms, pick up and haul garbage; perform minor repairs, including some plumbing, electrical, and carpentry work; pick up litter at visitor use areas; maintain campgrounds and associated facilities such as public water and wastewater systems, fire pits, fish cleaning station, picnic areas, etc., grounds, trails, boardwalks, and otherwise maintain park facilities. These positions require that you operate light pickups, electric carts, small tractors, and other types of small power equipment and hand tools. Identifies and corrects job safety and health hazards. Follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as protective hearing devices, hard hats, seat belts, steel-toed shoes, respirators, and protective clothing as required by the work being performed. This is a Career-Seasonal position and subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal position includes all the benefits of permanent employment but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, selectee will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. Selectee are guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment. The typical season for Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is April-March, but can be variable during these months due to project requirements or weather conditions.   • Summary This position is located in the Division of Facilities Management at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, based in Empire, Michigan. Incumbent performs as the primary sign maker, having full responsibility for administration, budgeting and planning as they relate to the sign program. Incumbent is supervised by the Roads, Trails and Grounds Supervisor and works on signs parkwide. Responsibilities Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work from approximately 6-10 months {i.e. October through March}, and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year. Position works independently to design, fabricate, and install trails, roads, and building signs. The incumbent has complete knowledge of all current manufacturing techniques and must be able to recognize existing and future maintenance problems. Incumbent is knowledgeable in the analysis of proper sign location layout and installation practices. Incumbent performs and leads carpentry work in the maintenance and construction of trail structures. Participates in hazard tree reduction program and clearing trails of blown down trees and brush. Performs other duties as assigned by the Roads and Trails Supervisor. This position works with minimal supervision. Incumbent provides input to Roads and Trails Supervisor on sign work priorities, personnel and training recommendations, and equipment/supplies needed. Once projects have been prioritized, incumbent will schedule individual phases of various projects. Responsibilities Major Duties: The primary responsibility of this position is to advise the Management Team on a wide range of administrative functions as these apply to the park and to direct (or obtain services of) specialists, technicians and clerical support positions in delivering services to management and employees of the park. As a member of the park management team, plans and monitors development of complex park-wide programs, procedures, operating policies, and internal controls. Initiates business studies to assess conditions that impact the effectiveness of park operations, develops new programs, improves effectiveness, resolves complex problems, and takes other management actions to ensure maximum probability of mission success.
