Job Overview: This position is located at the Dillon Unit and is a crucial position that will provide off and on the line leadership and supervision to the Dillon Unit Engine Crews. Another purpose of this position is assisting the Units’ daily prevention work, duties, and plans, while sometimes assisting the Land Office with planning and implementation as well. Partner and Cooperator relationships are very important to the Central Land Office, so this position will help build and maintain relationships with the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forests’ as well as the two counties within the Dillon Unit. The Dillon Unit Assistant Fire Management Officer supervises this position. Essential Functions (Major Duties or Responsibilities): SUPERVISION AND LEADERSHIP: This position will direct and coordinate the daily operations for the Dillon Unit fire crew under direction from unit fire management staff. The incumbent will provide leadership and supervision to the crew with day to day operations, as well as planning and monitoring training and training needs throughout the fire season. The incumbent will assist the crew with personal professional development needs to advance their career, while also ensuring the crew is trained and prepared to safely and effectively handle their Unit fire management responsibilities for the season. FIRE SUPPRESSION:/ / Can Provide technical advice as a County Fire Advisor on safety, strategy and tactics to County Fire Wardens and County Fire Chiefs during large complex or unusually dangerous fires on county protection areas. Arranges for additional fire suppression resources if needed. Physical and Environmental Demands: Essential functions occur in both office and field settings. Field work involves exposure to varying weather conditions, terrain, and road conditions; travel in mountainous terrain by vehicle or on foot; and arduous amounts of walking up and down hills. Wildland fire-suppression oversight involves exposure to smoke, dust, and related fire hazards and low-level flight in light helicopters over mountainous terrain. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: This position requires a high school diploma and a minimum of fire (5) years of progressive experience including fire-line leadership, Incident Command System (ICS) training and related fire program experience. Requires the ability to attain Incident Commander Type 4 and Strike Team/Task Force Leader certification upon hire. Skills and abilities in effective communication, both orally and written. Knowledge of the principles and practices of Wildland Firefighting; emergency management; natural resources; adult education and training; and fire management including suppression, protection, and prevention. Requires knowledge of State and Federal fire protection and natural resources laws. This position will require annual completion of an arduous Wildland Fire Work Capacity Test which includes walking three miles over level ground, with a 45lb. pack in no more than 45 minutes.
