  • Summary FTC summer student trainees assist FTC economists in making independent policy recommendations to the Commission based on theoretical and empirical analysis of relevant issues. Student trainees also may aid in other economic work that supports the agency\'s mission. Economists in all fields of applied microeconomics and econometrics are encouraged to apply. Responsibilities As an economist student trainee at the Federal Trade Commission, you will be performing the following duties: Apply statistical, mathematical, and econometric techniques to the analysis of data to give empirical content to economic theories and test hypotheses in support of policy recommendations. Under guidance of FTC economists, analyze and interpret economic and related information collected from companies to support policy and program decision-making. Assist FTC economists by collecting economic data and providing detailed economic analysis. Support investigations, reviews, and studies that apply a thorough knowledge of microeconomic theory to study the behavior of individual consumers, firms, and industries in order to analyze how markets establish relative prices among goods and services and thereby allocate limited resources among alternative uses. Analyze the likely effects on consumers and competition of mergers, agreements between firms, and individual firm business practices. Aid in the preparation of economic impact assessments under the laws that govern federal rulemaking to ensure adequate considerations of the costs and benefits of proposed rules. Participate in the development of oral and written products, tailored to the needs of the audience, in support of recommendations involving such far-reaching issues as the economic aspects of new or proposed investigations, policies, or rules affecting FTC programs. Undertake research aimed at addressing unresolved theoretical or empirical questions in topics related to competition, consumer protection, and general understanding of consumer and firm behavior. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications To be eligible, you must be currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment on at least a half-time basis in an accredited high school, college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational, or trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate. Certificate programs are defined as post-secondary education, in a qualifying educational institution, equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study that is part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational, or business school curriculum.
