Summary This position is located in the Division of Facilities Management at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, based in Empire, Michigan. Incumbent performs as the primary sign maker, having full responsibility for administration, budgeting and planning as they relate to the sign program. Incumbent is supervised by the Roads, Trails and Grounds Supervisor and works on signs parkwide. Responsibilities Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work from approximately 6-10 months {i.e. October through March}, and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year. Position works independently to design, fabricate, and install trails, roads, and building signs. The incumbent has complete knowledge of all current manufacturing techniques and must be able to recognize existing and future maintenance problems. Incumbent is knowledgeable in the analysis of proper sign location layout and installation practices. Incumbent performs and leads carpentry work in the maintenance and construction of trail structures. Participates in hazard tree reduction program and clearing trails of blown down trees and brush. Performs other duties as assigned by the Roads and Trails Supervisor. This position works with minimal supervision. Incumbent provides input to Roads and Trails Supervisor on sign work priorities, personnel and training recommendations, and equipment/supplies needed. Once projects have been prioritized, incumbent will schedule individual phases of various projects. This will include scheduling material deliveries, coordinating vehicles and equipment use, coordinating resources, and guiding volunteer groups and/or youth corps groups. Incumbent is responsible for on-site decisions concerning workflow and assignment and distribution of work for subordinates. Incumbent teaches and demonstrates sign installation and maintenance methods and techniques to lower graded personnel and volunteers, and sets the pace when working alongside them. Keeps lower graded employees informed of procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives. This position holds \"safety tailgate sessions\" whenever necessary and ensures others are doing the same, especially when initiating a new task or operating specialized equipment. Inspects all assigned equipment and vehicles on a regular, recurring basis to assure safe working conditions. Keeps supervisor informed on the status and progress of weekly work assignments, causes for delays, and any personnel issues. Incumbent is responsible for guiding and working with youth groups of 4 or more individuals at one time. As a regular and recurring part of the position, the incumbent is responsible for guiding lower graded maintenance positions. Occasionally, some projects may require extra efforts in doing tasks such as erecting signs and displays, moving lumber, climbing ladders and digging holes. May need to hike to inspect or replace signs in remote locations up to 8 miles carrying up to 30 pounds. May need to handle items up to 80 pounds for short periods of time. Will be required to sit or stand for long periods of time while performing routing, engraving, painting and computer operations. Working Conditions: Work is performed both in an indoor shop and outside. Incumbent may be exposed to temperatures ranging from 15 to 110°F in moderate to severe weather conditions and across varying terrain often fraught with ticks and/or poison ivy. Work will expose incumbent to noise, fumes, dust, and eye hazards relating to routing, painting, and trail work.
